Grantland Rice is surely still the most revered of all sportswriters. Red Smith is right up there, to be sure, but to read that lead paragraph of "The Four Horsemen" of Notre Dame by Rice is sufficient to bring goose bumps to the most jaded bleacherite.

Considering the NBA lockout, baseball's free agency and the new NFL agreement, here is something "Grannie" wrote about 80 years ago:

"Money to the left of them and money to the right.
Money everywhere they turn from morning to the night.
Only two things count at all from mountain to the sea,
Part of it's percentage, and the rest is guarantee."

There is also the host of scandals pertaining to college sports, most notably the one at PSU. Here are Rice's most famous lines:

"When the One Great Scorer comes
To mark against your name,
He writes -- not that you won or lost --
But how you played the game."

We all know of a few coaches who missed that.
