Good Jerry Carino Column on the Hurley Decision

I had just ordered the book as good juju, can't wait to read it
I just finished it recently. Someone had gotten it for me years ago and I had made a couple of starts at it but for whatever reason it just never resonated.

It's a good read. Not much Danny content in there, but the story itself is good

As a biz owner, I try to take as much as possible from how coaches run their programs and teams.
I expect this to end up near the top of my list.

Eleven Rings By Phil Jackson is currently the top of the list.

Lol, I don't know that Bob Hurley is a good analogy for business leadership in the modern world. When you read the book, you will know what I mean.

That said, though he was demanding, he is incredibly loyal to his players after graduation, provided they stuck with the program. he reminds me of Jim Calhoun in that respect, except, Calhoun remained accessible even to players that transferred out.

The story itself though is fascinating. I don't want to give you any spoilers, but either post or PM me after you've read it if you're interested in discussing it.

Absolutely will. Besides, I can learn more from failures than successes anyways. I love seeing how old principles and styles can be adapted to modern times.

Great article. Loyalty matters.
I concur and most talking heads focus solely on the approach by The Lakers and the money. Seems to me that decision was based on much more than that such as responsibility to Alex.

The "talking heads" see the big $$$$$ and think how can anyone turn down that amount of money. It's not always about the money.

Hurley had to take the trip to LA. He had to hear the offer. And don't think that he didn't know the past history of the Lakers, including the last 15 years of changing coaches every couple of years. No real job security in LA.

Hurley is where he belongs.

If you haven't seen The Street Stops Here, you should. I watched it long before the name Hurley had any sort of positive connotation and I was blown away.

More people in life and especially more athletes should choose this. Increasingly, some are. Do you have kids in school? Do they want to move? Friends? Family? How will you like the new place? There's really only one concern to prioritize: your happiness and that of your family. Nothing else matters. Not your legacy or pride or any of that nonsense.

When he left URI it was very difficult for him and his family to make the decision to stay or go…. It meant a little more than money.

I can only imagine how good and reassuring it felt knowing he made the right choice to stay at UConn.
