They have a strength of schedule of 79!!!! and they are 10th in the RPI. You can't get fat on a rediculous cream puff schedule and be a true number one. Whoever winds up as the 2 seed in their bracket has no excuse if they fail to make it to the final four.

Back in 2004, everyone was saying this about the undefeated St. Joe's team. They ended up a 1 seed (we'll see if the Zags do, I doubt it), and ran through into the Elite 8, and nearly beat a very scary Oklahoma State team (I was terrified of that team, and really wanted the rematch against GTech). They were legit.

I think Gonzaga is one of the better teams out there; I have no issue with their ranking because, as numerous others have pointed out, we have a tournament to sort that out.

We'll be looking at that SOS in a few years. We'd better hope teams like that get respect in ranking and seeding now, because we'll need it later.

I only wish that WE actually did have a tournament to sort stuff out.

Ummmm.....

With the conference future we are facing, we should be jumping on the Gonzaga bandwagon.

Thats going to be our SOS in a few years...

The Zags have played 9 teams ranked in the top 75 of the RPI, so its the rest of their dreadful sched that's bringing down their RPI. But we've also played 6 top 25 RPI teams to their 2.

As a comparison, vs. the top 75:

UCONN
1-25 2-4
26-50 2-2
51-75 1-2

Cuse
1-25 1-2
26-50 3-2
51-75 3-2

Zaga
1-25 2-0
26-50 3-2
51-75 2-0

If you're going to look at strength of schedule the only thing that matters in nonconference. It's the only thing they can control. And their nonconference strength of schedule is tougher than Michigan, Indiana or Michigan State.

But, you shouldn't get a pass because you play in a weak conference. While Gonzaga may be a top 25 team, they shouldn't be the number one team in the country. If they were to play a best of three at a neutral site against the other top five teams, how many games do you think they would win?

I never get why people get all upset by these rankings. Gonzaga's #1 is as legit as any other, because they are all meaningless.

No one who participates in the rankings is really paying much attention, they're just dropping teams some spots when they lose, and moving up the teams that haven't lost.

No one is getting seeded in the tournament based off the rankings, and no one is hanging any banners based upon the rankings (unless you're Duke obv.) They're just something to look at each week, and a device used by the idiot media to speculate about things, fill airtime, and promote different games.

Why not? They didn't choose their conference. Butler almost won a title from the Horizon League.

And Butler didn't get a pass; and that speaks more of their deserving to be in the Final Four because of their having to overcome their poorer seeding each year (you could argue about getting hot at the right time and so on). The teams with higher seedings have greater bodies of work to show that they deserve those high seedings. Gonzaga really doesn't have a resume that should impress anyone who is looking to give out a 1 or 2 seed, same as Butler in years past. Gonzaga is going to get at least a 3 seed regardless so it's not like it's between that and a 10 seed or whatever anyway.

They have won when they had too.
They are the last team standing-right now. Who else deserves to be a # 1? It's going to be a very competitive tourney with lots of fun games to see

This Gonzaga team looks entirely capable of winning a national championship. Anything can happen, of course, but I don't really have an issue with them being #1. They're very good.

Rankings matter because seeding matters. Take an historical look at final four qualifiers and their seed. There is a strong correlation between being a high seed and making it to the final four.

Gonzaga may be ranked first but they wont be an overall number one seed, at the end of the day its how you do in the tournament, how many years have all number 1 seeds made a Final Four in one year

Who cares? The point is, statistically you are far better off being a higher seed versus a lower seed. Therefore, by definition, ranking for the purposes of seeding do in fact matter.

Its set in stone that you have a better chance of advancing to the final four if you are a higher seed. Therefore, rankings/seeding matters.

No kidding that statistically the higher seed has a better chance of making it but it doesnt guarantee anything.
