48 hours of lame chuckling. Way, way over it. Just like the banal inanities Doris Burke(normally a fav of mine) spewed out in the UConn game while a game appeared to be going on on the court. I wonder if they ever bother to do consumer focus groups with a game tape. Might want to try it.
The networks mostly use the overall audience ratings to justify staffing their airtime. A very few use something called a "Q" score, which is close to the focus group approach, but is less subject to skewing and inaccuracy. "Q's" are more routinely used to select actors who appear in commercials. Other credibility measures are used for the commercial itself.
However, small-budget productions and local broadcasters do none of the above, as a general rule.
Here's an "oh by the way" to consider. Some of Burke's worst performances are those where she is paired with Dave O'Brien. She is much better, in my view, on the NBA games, paired with someone else, where she focuses much more keenly on the strategy and tactics of the game. She knows her hoops.
Three mikes at court side was a bad idea that none of the announcers were responsible for. That doesn't make it any less a bad idea.
I like Doris on the mike and have frequently said so. But I won't defend rubbish that she and O'Brien (and Kara) gave us today. Just a bad job. Period.
