Women’s Division I teams each have 15 scholarships, compared with 12 for men, so there are 644 more free rides for women.

This is a mathematically incorrect sentence. The link says that 13 scholarships are available per team in MCBB division I. There are 337 teams in MCBB and 335 in WCBB. So the figure of 644 stands correct. These mistakes always bother me.

Had to dig hard through the story to get to the inevitable UConn reference

“Kids who don’t end up playing at UConn can still learn lessons over the summer,” Gottlieb (Cal Coach Lindsey Gottlieb) said.;)

Good point in the article about being brutally honest about how good a player actually is.

D1 is a place where dreams often die, sometimes for this reason. Can think of plenty of examples, not only in WCBB but also other sports, where a potentially fulfilling D3 experience is shunned in favor of a lousy D1 experience. But with college costs continuing to go through the roof and D3 schools unable to give athletic scholarships, and with the lure of big time athletics, the saga will continue.

And inquiring minds want to know who those 2 extra teams are. Actually, I know one. Not the other.

I thought the number of division 1 schools was around 350 give or take.. For some reason 351 rings a bell

Those numbers are very outdated. There are now 351 men's teams and 349 women's teams.

Also the article itself is incorrect in another way. Many women's programs do not fund 15 scholarships - which is the NCAA max but not at all a requirement.
