Georgetown Post Game Thread

I don't understand the rushing guys out the door. Our guys leaving early hasn't worked out well historically.
I totally agree! I know it’s all about money, but how is working out for some who left early on the court, not financially ? Hawkins,Bouk,Jackson even McNeeley. Did they really have to go?

Thank you. The players are not getting open so let's blame the guy taking the ball out of bounds. This is on the coaching staff
I am assuming AK is doing whatbhe is told, but why not inbound the ball quickly before they can setup their press.

Yes, a blatant push for no apparent reason. Reeds picks are often moving; he doesn't set it well though both teams do the same thing a lot.
It well may be that the basic high hedge for our centers has the left-over effect of needing to be in two (2) places at once, so these centers are hyper in their overall movements. The extra movement they are required to perform also exhausts them to correctly perform both? In many games, both Reed & Rebie have to fight back for good position against their Bigs. It's really difficult to get in defensive or rebound position under these conditions let alone the increased chances for fouls being called.

The push off the screen by Reed is the thing with Reed.
At no point in any basketball player's career have you ever been taught to screen and push. It's not like it is a bad habit a player can acquire and it needs to be coached out of the player.
No player should ever even have the thought of pushing off like Reed did.
And it is in the front court where a ref will always see it.
He just wastes fouls on, I'll say it and blast me if you want, lazy thinking. Same with the weak and silly reach in on a 3 when UConn was up by 7. He can go off in to his own world which is detached from the nine other players, the coaches, and the refs. It is all the more frustrating when we also have evidence of him playing well- he just had seven assists less than a week ago. It's borderline bipolar.

98% of our screens are technically illegal. We do a lot do ghost screening where we never really stop and just slip thru. If you go to other teams forums, they haw cried about our screens for years.

This team is starting to give me 1995-96 Huskies vibes. That team had only two losses in the regular season, then lost to Mississippi State in the Sweet 16. That team won most of its Big East games handily. But… when either Ray or Sheffer (who, together accounted for just under half of the team’s scoring for the season) struggled, the team struggled. Current team has more balanced scoring. But both teams are/were not deep, and that lack of depth cost a two-loss team in the postseason. They beat a 16-seed Colgate team by single digits and then didn’t overpower Eastern Michigan in a round-of-32 win.

I think Hurley is really concerned about the reserves right now - particularly Stewart and Ross - and I fear that some of the starters will feel burned out by the completion of the BET.

Fanta screaming THIS IS THE MOST EXCITING VALENTINES DAY OF MY LIFE was a bright spot in the darkness that was those last 5 minutes

I don’t know to what degree Hurley is stressing the team to keep the fort on the gas. Multiple times over the last couple years, we’ve heard him make outright statements to the media and to the players in huddles to the effect of “we’re just the better team”. I wonder if that’s gotten in the players’ minds but man after losing to SJU and then not having a rebound game against Butler, you’d think the team would be super motivated. Where’s Karaban as the vocal leader on the floor? I think an underrated part of Tristen was his presence as a leader on the court. I hope Silas gets the confidence to be the vocal leader next year; because otherwise, we have a lot of what seem to be fairly passive personalities.
LOL. That quote of Fanta sounds like Steve Martin in "The Jerk"

Agree but I also see plenty of other teams do the same. Moving or non-set screens are treated lime traveling nowadays. And I'm not a fan of it.

A screen is literally the easiest thing to do. Stand straight and don't move. If the guard closes in too quick or gets too wide, that it the guards fault. But the big man (or any player setting a screen), just needs to stand still. And don't poke your hips out either.

I'm a big fan of making your fouls count. Down low? Crack 'em hard and prevent the and 1's. But I despise seeing big men waste a foul on crappy screens. But, those are teachable things. At what point does a coach have time to say "Oh yeah, don't push off when you release?".

I’m in denial. I’m blaming that free furniture promo for jinxing this team.

The thing I like to see more and more is Demary stepping up and trying to take over and go more one on one. He is really the only player who can and has the talent to do so. He is a special player and I hate how he defers to Ball and Karban late in games. Karaban has been playing great lately but Ball when guarded closely has shown he doesn't produce enough to be relied upon. I think once this team becomes Demary's team we will be stuck in this weird purgatory of being a good but not great team on the court.

The ghost screen shouldn’t be a moving screen because you’re not really screening the guy.

One ugly 2 loss team. You’re looking at a program with an elite winning culture compared to teams that can’t close out. But, a quality, long athletic squad will give the big time problems.

What did Calhoun say on the mic ? Something about the backup PG Smith ? Reibe ? I didn't hear that part. Only that he told Hurley. This was during the part when Hasheem was speaking.
More experience in case injuries etc, gotta watch replay again so don’t get gaslit about what he actually said

This was his longest answer of the interview and you can tell he’s frustrated with the crowds. At BOTH venues.
Dumping his resentments at the fanbase in a press conference is kind of questionable wisdom. Is that supposed to put the fans on a guilt trip? In a perfect world the fans would be packed in the stands screaming and yelling. Their wallets would be filled and their credit cards paid off. If only everything was perfect..................................

Yea. That's up there for the worst take in Boneyard history. Two NCs and one Husky of Honor award later...
What's fascinating is that it was written at nearly the exact same point in the season.

Feb 18th, 2023.

There's hope.

Does Hurley sound any different than we do?
No, he doesn't. If it isn't the refs its the team's "lack of toughness" or too many fouls or the fanbase too quiet or not showing up. There seems to be a real lack of unity from top to bottom. Being constantly upset doesn't produce positive confidence.

One of the worst games of the season for many reasons:

- As has happened many times over the years the opposing team shot and made many well guarded acrobatic shots from above the arc. (shades of Teddy Allen of MNSU)

- Husky turnovers, especially on in-bound passes, continue to be a real problem. Does the team not have various inbounding plays?

- Dumb fouls, prime example the Tarris 5th foul on a 3 pt shooter late in the game was one of his worst of the year.

- Leading by 14 with about 10 or less minutes in the game and allowing G'town to get with 2 as the clock was winding down.

To where has the dominant team at the beginning of the season vanished?

A win is a win, I guess... With 2 really tough games coming up in the last 5.

It shouldn't be difficult to fill up a small arena for the best program in college basketball and have the fans engaged in the game. We're not trying to fill up a 90,000 seat stadium. Hurley is 100% right voicing his displeasure.

Our offense is built on multiple screens. Other teams often seem to just dribble and try to get a shot off as in "make a play." They can't even figure out what we are doing and more than one coach has said they don't have time to review all those plays so they try to play us as tight as possible, grab our jerseys and any other way of disrupting the flow (whether legal or illegal as long as they can get away with it by the refs). That's what we get for developing a sophisticated offense (at least to the players who can grasp it).

The Mulready shooting was absurd, I had to pull up his stats to make sure he was really like that and of course he was not. Dude was flicking those shots up like he was prime Klay Thompson.
Mul came Ready to light it up, coming out of a 4 game stretch where he was 7-9 from deep. Going 4-7 from beyond the arc last night gives Georgetown a new shiny weapon if he can shoot it at that clip at that volume.

There's hope.

It was also written after we nearly blew an 18 point lead because we couldn’t get the damn ball inbounds.

KJ Lewis only a junior, we could use a two way guy like that.
I don't like posts implying we should poach players from other teams, especially from BE teams. The Portal is a reality, but save this rhetoric till the portal opens up and with players who have declared. Granted you said, "like that", but you noted he is just a junior. Come on!

Looking anything but bulletproof, but we'll take the gutted out win. Will these type of wins lead to wins against the better teams? Will we beat St. John's in the rematch and sweep Villanova? And how will we fare in the post season? This team leaves us with lots of questions. Right now I am thinking Georgetown is a better team than their record indicates, and we STILL haven't reached our full potential.
