So Auriemma will say this to a recruit when talk turns to conferences: "We stopped playing for conference championships 10 years ago. I say I have so many conference championship trophies, I don't know where they are, but I know where are our nine [national] championship trophies are. They're right in my office? You want to see them?"

And a bunch more [HERE].

"There's no curse to being Irish."???? Tell that to Muffet and crew the last three times they faced UConn.

That ploy about showing off the NC trophies definitely sounds like a recruiting violation. I wonder whether it will be Vandy again or back to UTenn that will complain to the NCAA that Geno is using unfair recruiting tactics.

I'm not so sure about that. My wife and I were in Geno's Southington Restaurant and the 2014 trophy is in the entryway. One of my first questions was "Is this a duplicate?". I was told it is not. Sounds good in the speech though.

I don't know. Maybe it was on loan ...that's not uncommon.

.-.
"Stanford beat us in November ... .people stormed the court. They haven't won a damn game since, but that one game made their season."

Umm, I believe they won the PAC-10 Tourney Championship.....

Very early in the year Geno stood in a practice huddle and told the team to forget any notion that they were defending the national championship from others who wanted to take it away and he said new year, new championship, and we are attacking everyone else. Love that attitude. More of it in that article quote: "but at the end of the day it's not who you've played against," Auriemma said. "It's who they have to play against, and that's us."

Yeah well he likes to say outrageous over the top things for effect. I'm sure he's quite aware they won it.

Blue for fear of another NCAA violation being reported by an unnamed SEC school, the official story is: You and your wife were lied to. That was definitely a duplicate trophy sitting in Geno's restaurant.

Still think the best quip I've seen today was by a Vol poster who said he was almost as afraid of Chattanooga (possible 2nd round opponent for UTenn) as of UConn. Then he said, "Beat'em by 50!"

So the Mocs may be more fearful than UConn, but the Vols should beat them by 50. You can't make this stuff up!

I hope not since it was his son Michael who told me that. Now don't be paranoid. I don't think anybody cares where the Trophy is "Loaned" to for display as long as they don't don't take any recruits to the Restauarant for some free scaloppini of veal :p

Rocky,
As I was watching the Geno project and he was addressing the team my first though was I have heard those same sentiments expressed before, same message- attack not defend. It was General Patton addressing his troops in England circa 1944.
Here are the two quotes side by side.

Patton: "I don't want to get any messages saying, "I am holding my position." We are not holding a [curse word] thing. Let the Germans do that. We are advancing constantly and we are not interested in holding onto anything, except the enemy's {offensive word}. We are going to twist his {offensive word} and kick the living [curse word] out of him all of the time. Our basic plan of operation is to advance and to keep on advancing regardless of whether we have to go over, under, or through the enemy. We are going to go through him like {offensive word} through a goose; like [Curse word] through a tin horn!"
Geno: "We're not defending our championship. We're not defending anything, no matter what the media and everyone else thinks. We won that trophy last year and put it in our trophy case. We're not losing that trophy. Nobody's taking that away from us. It'll be there. What we're doing, is attacking this year. We're attacking everyone we play on our schedule, because we're trying to win "another" trophy to put in our trophy case. "

I am thinking it was a duplicate of some sort....I can't imagine the school letting Geno take the Original and putting it on display in his restaurant..... Nice touch though.

Coco , I just loved it when I first heard Geno say that to the team. Had me wanting to go and suit up. Then I remembered my age and my arthritis kicked in too.

Geno's comment is actually very astute. In any sport or competition I know of "protecting" a lead is a surefire path to the loss of a lead. As soon as team starts trying to avoid a bad thing from happening, bad things happen. This is often the case when an underdog in a BB game finds themselves with a 10 point lead and 4 or 5 minutes left. Too many times they stop doing what gave them that lead and start milking the clock. Then, with one minute left they find themselves in a tied game. Or the pro football team that leads 24-13 with 5 minutes left and goes into a prevent defense, which rarely prevents anything but a loss. My game is golf and I know from experience that playing to avoid trouble or to protect a good round doesn't work.

Geno is a master at getting his teams mentally ready. One reason he is seen screaming with a 30 point lead and 2 minutes left is to keep his team from "protecting".

Would love to see him in those jodhpurs, riding whip and chrome helmet! Plus the ivory handled pistols, of course. But I wish him a better end than George.

Umm, I believe that was sarcasm

I don't think so. I think Geno has little regard for that conference and also was galled by the loss followed by Stanford's rapid collapse.

should that trophy be school's property, it can be loaned out for commercial promotions?

They lost 8 games or so- I think it was more rhetorical?

Rocky- U r killing me with this post! I was going to do a new thread as to the head coaches and which Generals in history they remind you of! And the say Geno is obviously Patton. I just saw Patton 360 again recently and thought that would be a fun thread!

Don't pick up the gun unless you're prepared to aim to kill! Sorry, Geno-ista.

well, UT lost 10 games one season in the 90's and ended up won the big dance.
True- but when Geno is on, he is like an artist painting with a broad brush!!! You can't disect every little comment when he's on a roll! You have to sit back, embrace it, and enjoy it! To disect this stuff means your not listening correctly! :)
