Geno's Open-Door Policy

It's been amazing seeing the different UConn teams supporting each other at games, and coaches interacting with each other. IMHO, there's been a huge shift over a number of years of everyone "helping" each other, and that's what a great ADir does and a great ADept needs for all programs to be successful.

Agreed. One of the things people maybe don't realize about Geno - not only is he a great coach, but he's a great and generous guy. He wants all the sports programs to be successful at UCONN and will do whatever he can to help them however he can. You can tell in the comments from other coaches how much they appreciate this. Just one more reason to love our Geno!

Many years ago, when the Big East Tournament was at the Civic Center, and the team used to hole up at the Goodwin Hotel, I walked into the Goodwin after a game. Geno was in the sitting room by the lobby grabbing a glass of wine. I had never met him before and I mentioned to him that the team "just played a great game". We struck up a conversation, he poured me a glass a wine, and we continued to shoot the breeze. Just a real pleasant, down to earth guy. Never forgot that meeting!

Geno is very free with his time and knowledge to other BB programs both men's and women's to come and watch practices and discuss techniques!
Cori Close of UCLA and assists were visitors some years ago!

Great interview. Coach Penders is one of my favorite coaches at UConn since he doesn't always get the accolades that he deserves. Although, the WBB team did not make the Final Four last year it was pretty cool for Geno to experience what the MBB team did in Houston. I agree that the UConn coaches seems to be closer than they used to be with Coach Mora attending many sporting events too.
