With 771 career wins, Geno sits just 2 behind Andy.

Landers is currently 7th among all coaches all-time. He's 6th among D-I coaches, and 5th among active D-Is.

Be interesting to see how much further Geno can rise up. It's hard to make up ground on the still-active coaches ahead of him.

Suspect Geno will move ahead of Andy by the end of this year. Will probably never catch Tara, Summitt and maybe B Stevens. Should have enough years left coaching after Hatchell and Stringer retire which will probably be in tow or three years at the most. He will also pass Conradt five years from now.

Geno is 11 years and 300 wins behind Pat. If she were to quit today, I am not sure Geno could catch her--or would want to. He seems destined to surpass 900, but how high will he want to go?

I think CVS will stay around for atleast 4 more years. Until this current freshman class is gone.

It is interesting that all but one of the top nine coaches are still active - shows what title IX has done for women's sports in general and specifically basketball. I expect Geno will move about 5 wins/year faster than most of these coaches not named Tara and Pat. And yes, he should pass Andy this year.

tara still strikes me as pretty young. but i think she's about 58. still, pretty young. i bet she has a good 10 years left in her if she wants. Pat OTOH, i think will have max 2 years left depending on how fast her disease progresses. if Stringer "only" goes 4 more years, she will be approx 20 or so wins away from 1,000. it wouldn't surprise me to see her go a 5th and get up to 1,000.

the thing that blows my socks off is Geno's winning %. he started 12-15, 14-13, and 17-11 in his first 3 years. Pat inherited a team that was better going 16-8, 16-11 and 28-5 her first 3 years. it's a testament to just how sensational Geno is that he now has the highest winning % by a lot...

Geno btw is 57 and Pat is 59. Stringer is 63, Hatchell is 59, and Landers is 59. interesting to me that all these greats are fairly close in age...

I noticed his great winning percentage, too, Eric, but had forgotten those early struggling seasons--although a lot of coaches DREAM of 17-11 !

Leon's .8688 is the only better career percentage than Geno.

An undefeated season this year would get him very close. Over 4 losses or so and he loses ground.

Given the difference in the sport over the years, I have always found this particularly impressive.

NCAA record book for highest winning percentage. I assumed Geno's info from the above, as the record book was 2 years old. Leon Barmore has been retired since 2002, so his numbers are solid. Available through NCAA.com

But not in years coached. All of them started in the 1970s except Landers (1980) and Geno (1986). Of this group, Geno's been a head coach by far the shortest time, and his meteoric rise into the ranks of the all-time winningest coaches has been dramatic.

Quite simply, a brilliant career, with more to come.

More? An article posted elsewhere in this page, based on the identity of last year's Final Two and Tennessee's recent absence from the Final Four, suggests the time of UConn and TN rolling over everyone else is past.

Well, in the case of UConn, check again in five or six years. Based on UConn's gangbusters recruiting, to say nothing of the thin evidence of last year's upsets in the Final Four, I think the statement is premature.

bold statements JS, but you are preaching to the choir. i know many UCONN fans feel optimistic about the future, but i'm one of those who thinks this is the last year for teams to have a shot at beating UCONN for a long time to follow. if UCONN lands Diamond in 2013 and Turner in 2014, forget it. you will be spot on with any ridiculous predictions you make for the next 5-6 years.

What amazes me is that Leon's .8688 is actually now within reach after the last four spectacular seasons. He actually has a decent chance of surpassing Leon before the current freshman class graduates.

Tara started her head coaching career in '78. Before Stanford, she spent two years at Idaho, and 5 at Ohio St, where her last team went to E8. She started at Stanford the same year Geno was hired at UConn ('85'86). Both had bad first few years, then Stanford won their first NC in 5 years, compared to 10 years for Geno's first. And we know what happened in '95, and thereafter. :) Of course they are both great coaches, but my pt was in the early years, getting $$ support from your school was as important as X&Os. Tara got the support from Stanford from the get go, which helped her recruit nationally, something few programs had.

I don't think anyone knows how much longer Geno is going to coach. I hope its another 20 years, but thats not going to happen. My guess is it will be at least another five years when the great class of 2012 graduates. Having the most wins of any college coach is not a priority with Geno. Geno will quit when he feels the time is right.
