Two things stand out. Geno says B Griner did not "progress" her game in college to give her more of a game away from the rim and that allowed Louisville to win by double teaming and banging on her. He reiterated the point that Brittany G's acceptance of a try out with Cuban's team would end up being demeaning to the women's game, because she would spend 3 days in camp getting beat up, then sent home. Calls them as he sees them. Most interesting statement though came in that very long article brought up the other day when he made his statements about Bill Clinton and American Presidents in general!

Interesting comments on recruiting. UConn w/ its national championships can get involved with almost every kid they're interested in, but getting them to commit is not as easy as some might think. He mentions kids saying they don't want to sit on the bench or want to play 40 minutes rather than 20 minutes a game. He also says that there's only a couple of kids who can make make a team national champions as opposed to making a team really good or better and all of the best schools are after them.

Same thing I saw. BG is good, even great but has sooooooo much more potential. KM's fault or BG's own, not sure.

There's a problem for a coach with a star player, I think. The college coach (at least at the higher levels) is primarily paid to win. Getting players to improve certainly contributes toward winning. But if the coach thinks that more variety to a player's games detracts from her main strength, or that other players don't have the skills to allow the star to use that variety, the coach is going to choose winning every time. In Griner's case, UConn won by a point early in her career in a game where she uncharacteristically shot poorly from the foul line. She had a year when her team won all their games. This year, she lost a close game to a good team when Baylor's next best player went down early. Then she lost another game by a point after a furious come back put them ahead briefly at the end. Would it have made a difference had she had more of a high post game? Who knows. Wilt never had a game beyond 6 feet from the hoop (and missed more FTs than most players take in their career). She should be a real force at the next level when teams could burn themselves by trying to play keep away from her.

Both and neither.

I think one of the great things with Uconn's system of offense and defense is that it can take advantage of players strengths, but can also accommodate a players ever expanding game easily. And the coaches therefore are more focused on not only perfecting one aspect, but on expanding and growing the player's game. And the results show not in the AAs that make it to the pro ranks, but more particularly in the non-AAs that have continued success - Greene, Swanier, and Jessica Moore for example. Would anyone have predicted their continued employment over much more highly regarded college players without the extraordinary foundation of Uconn coaching?
