Geno’s Storrs restaurant permanently closing?

Guess Geno is gonna need to coach a little while longer if his restaurant business is not working out.

Not shocking considering the affect of the pandemic on businesses that count on the gathering of crowds of people to keep going.

I fear that one of the businesses that will not be coming back for a long, long time are restaurants. Many of them will be going the way of the malls. Between social distancing, food shortages and economic resources I think we are going to see major changes in our culture. Hopefully one of the positive outcomes from this pandemic is that people are starting to realize that sitting down as a family and eating together is also an opportunity interact with one another. Some of the best times our family had together was just sitting around the table talking with each other.

So if we want Geno food we can only go to Mohegan and Cafe Aura now?
I ate at Geno's fast break at Mohegan. Some of the worst food I ever ate. The wife broke a tooth on some kind of chicken sandwich. I order a Philly cheese steak (what else?) that was still partially frozen when it arrived on the table. Not necessarily Geno's fault, but I'll never eat there again.

So his culinary coaching is drastically lacking vs. his basketball coaching?

Skeets - I agree with you 100%. His restaurants in the casino are terrible. I have posted here that he should be embarrassed that a Philly guy should put his name on such crappy cheese steaks. We ate in his Storrs restaurant once just once. Calling it mediocre would be an inflated grade.

The guy should either stick to coaching or hire competent restaurant managers.

The restaurant business is tough during the pandemic. Geno was part of a group urging the Governor to relax some of the rules. I believe he thinks that outside seating at Cafe Aura can work.

Not much room for seating he already had to give in and pay for use of the parking lot

This is an excellent point except for people that are retired and there are no family members living close and going out to eat a few times a month is actually favored over staying in and preparing meals for just 2.
Having so many restaurants go permanently out of business will probably make it a lot harder to actually go out to the remaining restaurants due to the concept of supply and demand.

Restaurants will go out of business. That's the nature of the restaurant beast. Unfortunately, all of the Auriemma investments (restaurants, wine, sauce etc.) are just not very attractive.

Then there are people like me who are a household of one. Restaurants are a necessary resource... especially for take out. Instead of cooking and talking to myself while eating poor to mediocre food... I can get take out.... and come home and talk to myself while eating really good restaurant food.

I think we are going to see many restaurants not reopen. We've already had a couple down here in Central Florida. There chains but we are hearing that some Mom & Pop ones are closing. Fortunately for us, our favorites have survived so far. I know of three Mom & Pop restaurants by us that our community has really supported during the lock down. These restaurants delivered to our door and the food was still hot! When we lived in CT and went to Mohegan, we would frequently eat at one of Geno's places. Nothing spectacular or to write home about.

Yeah, I've spoken to a few restaurant folks in town. They don't know what is going to happen. Low capacity requirements make it worse. Not a good business for the times.

I urge everyone to do some take-out. I've been doing so.

Bought my parents a gift card to Geno's Grille last Christmas. They are season ticket holders for the men's team at Gampel and figured they could get a nice meal around a game. They didn't use it before the season ended and now that it closed I guess that's it? They tried calling the restaurant in Manchester but they said they can't accept GC's from another restaurant.

I hate eating alone (widower) in restaurants. Unfortunately, I am a great cook and still cook for two—which is what I am beginning to look like.
