Gandy

[Longtime fan]

Can anyone inform me as to why Gandy is never even considered for play, regardless of the score? I understand that coach believes "she is not ready yet," whatever that means. She is an athlete; she has played ( successfully) two years of HS basketball in the US, and coach believes she has real potential in a year or so. But, let's be serious folks, she cannot still be so unready ( after several months on the team, working at practice, conditioning, etc ) that it would be unsightly to watch her on the court. She can certainly play. She must know the UCONN system pretty well. It makes no sense to me unless there is an injury we don't know about? Or does her not playing more than the 4 minutes she once got, qualify her to red shirt? I must have missed the answer to the Gandy mystery because no one else seems to have this question. Please advise. Thanks.

Malou-Mamel arrived in Storrs this offseason as a project, a rare and raw 6-foot-5 center with an endless ceiling. But because of her lack of experience (she only began playing basketball at age 12), she’s not quite at the UConn standard just yet.​
