For UConn recruit Gandy Malou-Mamel, coming to America was about so much more than basketball
(gifted article, hopefully)
“I’ve learned the hard way to run toward things that scare you,” the essay began.
Malou-Mamel, a 6-foot-6 center who didn’t start playing basketball until she was 12, will arrive at UConn in June, set to study marketing and play for Geno Auriemma's Huskies. It’s a daunting, uncomfortable next step. Which is exactly why she knows it’s worth doing.
“You know, I’ve done a lot of hard things,” Malou-Mamel said. “This one is probably going to be the hardest. But a lot of things that scare me have transformed my life. Coming here scared me. Joining the [Gill St. Bernard’s] team scared me. Meeting my new family scared me. Doing things that scared me always gave me such a great opportunity to do well. I’m so nervous and so excited to go to UConn. I just care about it so much.”
