This team will be fun to watch! If you don't have tickets, get them. You'll thank me.

Several welcome improvements at Gampel:

1 The Yellow Jackets are now friendly, chatting to the fans. Before the game they let anyone get closer to the floor to watch the warmups. Nice change.

2 The UConn Husky Ice Cream concession was moved out of the shadows to a prominent location overlooking the floor at one of the corners. Too long a line to sample the wares, but a major, major improvement.

3 Huge turnout of students in the student section. Gampel rocks even during an exhibition game if enough students attend. I hope they do this throughout the season, but I note that this year there are more games played in Hartford than there are in Storrs -- I think this is a mistake.

4 Ticket prices have come down. This is good news for everyone.

But a few glaring problems remain, all of which are easily fixed if management cares:

1 Save the money and get rid of Emily, the "sideline emcee". She adds nothing, and her cloying stupidity and really, really dumb questions are unwelcome.

2 Save the money and get rid of the rap-DJ. He adds NOTHING.

3 Turn the volume down a few decibels. It seems louder this year. Why? Afraid no one can hear Emily, the rap-DJ, the announcer or the advertizements? And, even though the pep band only plays at scripted times (there is now a total lack of spontaneity with the cheerleaders and the pep band), several times they were drowned out with advertizements and/or videos on the screens.

These three bad things are easily fixed. Gampel doesn't need to replicate the Mohegan Sun arena to be successful. And, on the by-and-by, both Gampel and the XL Center ALWAYS have better attendance than the Mohegan Sun arena anyway. Why copy this?

One last observation that is expensive to fix: Gampel itself is getting old and needs some maintenance/renovation, including its roof that looks like it is leaking.

I am really not complaining. This year's team is terrific and fun to watch. I already have rooms for New Orleans. This should be their 6th consecutive Final Four.

Here's something that would be easy to fix. In the Gampel info section, Under Cameras it states:
  • Cameras - Video cameras and recording devices are strictly prohibited. Cameras with lenses that exceed 90mm are not permitted. Single-frame and flash photography are allowed.
Better not stop reading there, because under Prohibited Items, it prohibits telephoto lens-type cameras.
  • Prohibited Items - The following items are prohibited inside of Harry A. Gampel Pavilion: book bags/backpacks, laser pointers, noisemakers, whistles, air horns, coolers, cans, glass bottles, flasks, any outside food or beverage, drugs/alcohol, weapons of any kind, telephoto lens-type cameras, animals except designated assistance animals, banners/flags, and any items deemed by management to be dangerous or inappropriate.
So, if you have a camera with a 50mm , can you bring it in? Apparently no or perhaps yes. I asked the ticket taker, she said yes, if it's not a telephoto lens (it isn't). I then went to buy a ticket and encountered a security person at the box office who said, "You can't bring that camera in." I asked why since it's only a 50mm lens? His response, "You can't bring that camera in." I asked him if he could check with a supervisor because the rules say under 90mm is okay. His response: "You can't bring that camera in." At that point, I gave up and put the camera in the car.
That security guy did a wonderful job of spoiling the experience of attending the game.

Tell you know 55 lawyers who will take the case pro bono because they are UConn fans and he is not enforcing the stated and published rules of his employer.

Save the money and get rid of the rap-DJ. He adds NOTHING.

That alone cancels any improvements made. Another reason to stay home and watch on TV.

I should have taken a photo of the offending security guy before I left. :)

I've brought my Nikon in many times and I've never been stopped. I just put my long lens in my pocket and put it on when I get to my seat. At the xl, same rules apply...but security came up to me during one game and asked me if I wanted to stand by the court to take some pics. At the xl they actually measure the lens and standard lens are fine.

With todays digital cameras and advanced optics it is virtually impossible to tell the real power of optics even when limited to optical mode. 12x to 21x in optical mode with decent quality is becoming a regular option. Add a cane with a monopod mount and you can get some amazing pics.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the most immediate need for improvement at Gampel...the bench seats. Can't believe that the home attendance wouldn't improve, at least for the big games, if the upper level bench seats were replaced with chairs like the lower level. I attended the UNC game a number of years ago before I became a season ticket holder and the best seats I could get was a bench seat at the home end of the court. They're so uncomfortable that I really wanted to leave half way through the game even though UConn was blowing them out. Just curious, anybody know what the breakdown is bench seating vs individual seats...I suspect that almost a quarter of the total are benches, but that's just a SWAG on my part.

The biggest improvement would be to replace Gampel with something like the Bryce Jordan Center at PSU.

The top of my wish list, absent anything else, is to replace those gawd-awful bleachers with chair backs. Yeah, you would lose some seating capacity, but when was the last time there was a sellout? If I had something to support my poor back I would reconsider buying season tickets on campus now that my kids are all growed up. My back has been out for a week and just the thought of sitting on those Gampel bleachers is sending muscle spasms into my thighs!
