Phee with a nice pass to Williams, but she can't score in traffic.

USA shot 5-27 in the first half. And still won.

10 points on FGs and 18 points on FTs.

Players likely to be on the team who haven't reported yet:

Sue
Stewie
Elena
Diana
Brittney

That leaves 7 openings.

Of those playing tonight, Tina is a lock and Nneka is likely.

That gets us to 5, but still looking for guards.

Players who acquitted themselves well tonight:

Wilson--she'll be on the team

Williams--a likely selection over Stef

Plum--someone who can make a 3

Collier--a little bit of everything, including clutch rebounding and FTs at the end

Tuck--also a bit of everything

In terms of guards, I think Tiffany and/or Jewell have good chances. That's 7 players for 5 slots.

Clarendon was ok. I didn't see much from T. Mitchell, Ionescu, or Diamond.

Will Sue and Elena play, given their current injuries?

I thought Canada played well the first half, but the USA was understandably disjointed and had no rhythm. I'm rooting for all UCONN players as I watch the game but, being part French Canadian, want to see Canada acquit itself well. The USA comeback was not a surprise but I expected to see a better game from Canada in the second half. They had played the night before and I imagine they were all dealing with tired legs. Given that this game was not very important, I was surprised to see Kia on the floor as much as she was. I think she played the entire second half. The USA Team will be fine when the starters return to the fold, and having Wilson, Williams and Collier on hand certainly wouldn't hurt. As for Canada, if last night is any indication, there's Nurse, Achonwa, and "everybody else". I know Kia's goal is to medal. It won't be gold, but whether or not that happens will largely depend upon how she and Achonwa assert themselves. It was just one exhibition game, but that's my takeaway. As an aside, after watching this game I wouldn't mind seeing Napheesa in a Liberty uniform next year, or the young lady in the audience signing autographs for her fans (KLS).

Courant write up: U.S. Women's Basketball Team Beats Canada, But It Wasn't Easy

“What I saw in Napheesa is what I’ve known Napheesa to be,” Team USA head coach Dawn Staley said. “I had an opportunity to coach Napheesa in 2018, I think … obviously the group that was out there gave us what we needed. Did I think about [substituting]? I did, but they were playing so well together I figured I would just let them finish the game out.”

“I think here in Connecticut we have the best fans, and the fact that we had some people here tonight can attest to that. It’s just such an honor to play with these girls,” Collier said, nudging A’ja Wilson. “Rookie of the Year right here. We have so many good people on this team that I just feel blessed to be here.”
