Games Mar. 2-8

Whew...Nicholls now up 10 on McNeese in the 4th quarter.

Losing to Ball State, a top 60 team, wasn't terribly bad

Ball St. turned around and lost to Northern Illinois today. MAC cannibalizing itself a bit at the end of the regular season?

Same thing with Ohio losing now four in a row.

Nicholls is on fire! Going for their 7th win in a row.
Nicholls won it going away! A rousing 72-53 victory and the perfect springboard to the prestigious Southalnd tournament in lovely Katy, Texas.

I will say, they had a bit of an advantage over the team they beat out for 8th, Central Arkansas, due to the unbalanced conference schedule. Nicholls only had to play 5 games against the "Big Four" (TAMCC, SFA, ACU, SHSU), whereas UCA had to play 7 games against the Big Four. Both of them went a combined 0-12 against those four teams.

Unbalanced schedules are the scourge of college athletics. If only we could go back to the days of conferences having 8-10 members. Sigh.

.-.
West Virginia up 32-27 at the half over Texas Texh. To say this is a must win for WV would be an understatement.

Gondrezick has 10 but Martin has zero. Where has Tynice’s game gone?

Seriously what happpened to Tynice Martin? She was on the verge of becoming something special after she single handily led WV to the Big 12 tournament championship in 2016-2017. I guess her foot injury which caused her to redshirt the next season and also her legal troubles off the court just really set her aback.

Yeah it’s been a real disappointment. I was really high on her after that tour de force campaign. She’s shown flashes of that in the past couple years, but too few and far between.

I see WV just scraped by with a win today. They have a big opportunity when they host TCU on Saturday.

Nicholls now guaranteed a spot in next week's conference tournament; they now sit in the #7 position. 8-seed Southeastern Louisiana has one game remaining, against 5th place New Orleans and current 6th place Incarnate Word takes on Abilene Christian. Outside shot for Central Arkansas to take the 8-seed...but too early in the morning for me to untangle all of the possible scenarios.

I do know that Dobee and company will be playing next week!

Major upset brewing in C-USA. Old Dominion trails UAB by 8 in 4Q. This could hurt ODU’s chances of an at large big in case they don’t win the tournament.

Other mid major bubble teams in tight games:

Bradley up by only 1 over Indiana State at the half. This would be a TERRIBLE loss for Bradley. Indiana St is 5-23.

James Madison, another team very near the cut line, trails Elon by 2 at the half. Elon isn’t as bad as Indiana State, but they’re sub .500 and this would be very damaging to JMU’s resume.

Old Dominion fought back to force overtime. One ODU player missed 2 FTs but she got her own rebound. Then her teammate was fouled and she sank her FTs. UAB missed their chance at the buzzer.

.-.
Old Dominion lost to UAB in overtime, making that a season sweep by the Blazers. Maybe @triaddukefan has a meme of a sad monarch in his arsenal?

Bad day all around for the NCA&T Aggies... first their womens team went down to defeat to arch rival Central. Then.. in the second part of the doubleheader.... the men's team lost the MEAC title to Central.

Drake trailing Northern Iowa by 9 at the half.

Northern Iowa might have a sliver of a chance at an at-large bid, but this is a must-win for that to remain possible.

Northern Iowa is gonna do this. Up 11 w/ a minute left.

.-.
We've got the battle of Idaho going on. Better throw out the record book! Vandals vs. Bengals.

Montana St. ended conference play at 19-1, just missed an unblemished record.

Last day of the regular season for the Big South. Hampton at Radford in the battle for the #2 seed in the conference tournament. UNC-A visits HPU in probably the last WCBB game ever in the Historic Millis Center.

Central Michigan has been playing with fire all season, and it seems to be catching up to them.

They're in another dogfight, down 3 to Eastern Michigan in 3Q. This would be CMU's third consecutive loss, and their second straight loss to a sub-100 team.

Just a week ago CMU looked like a lock. They have a very high RPI but their resume is actually quite weak, and this losing skid is jeopardizing their chances at an at-large bid. They might need to win the MAC tournament if they can't win today.

They have a very high RPI but their resume is actually quite weak

I know this happens, but it seems rather counter intuitive.

CMU won by 7.

Oklahoma is getting boat raced by Texas Tech. Didn't that just happen? Nearly gave up 60 points in the first half.

.-.
Western Kentucky survives a scare vs. Louisiana Tech, 71-67. For a team right near the cut line, this was an absolute must-win.

Missouri State also had a close game with Loyola Chicago, but pulled away late for a 72-61 game in Alexa Willard's final home game.

A couple of important C-USA games between bubble teams:

MTSU surges late for a 79-74 win at Charlotte.

Old Dominion and Rice are tied 41-41 in mid-3Q. ODU beat Rice a few weeks ago in Norfolk, but has since taken 2 losses to fall a game behind Rice in the standings.

The CUSA tournament should be fun... too bad its on CBS Sports

ODU and Rice are going down to the wire. Two point game with about 3:00 left. Too bad this game isn’t on espn3.

Another huge game with bubble implications under way with TCU visiting Morgantown. WV needs this win very badly to stabilize their resume.

In Big South Action..... Radford defeats Hampton and claims the 2nd seed in the conference. The Camels of Campbell couldnt get over the hump and lost to Garner Webb. On senior night.... My Panthers of HPU blasted the Bulldogs of UNC-A. .... 89-62. NO ONE want to face HPU in the tournament that starts in a few days.
