Kentucky was able to blow out Arkansas to preserve a little energy for their game with Georgia tomorrow. They probably have to blow out Georgia to be able to keep things somewhat close for at least a quarter against a fresh South Carolina team.

And let's be honest. Dawn hears the "Kenny Brooks can hold his own against Staley" talk. If Kentucky advances to the quarterfinals, Dawn's going to run those poor girls out of the state of South Carolina to quiet that noise. You can tell that she's not too fond of Kenny.

I honestly think that the coaching staff kept back a few strategic decisions so that we didn't play our full hand against them on Sunday (since there was a high probability we could face them again within the week at the SEC tournament)

I can see that.

I just don't think it's going to matter because Kentucky's not going to have legs if they get past Georgia (and that's not a given).

Back in our day, iPads didn't exist. And if they did, I would've been doing the same thing that Jerzy was doing (and I had an exemplary academic reputation at my school). iPads are fun to use, and I wish there were better ways to integrate them into the HS curricula.

Just doesn't seem necessary to call for ISS (severe disciplinary action) for a Gen Z student who is doing what Gen Z students do. Blame the school for not banning the technology. Considering that it's Sierra Canyon, they may have actually provided it.

But enough of that! Let me hop off the soap box. 🙂

First half ends with LSU with 4 point lead. Both scoring pretty efficiently. 40-36 Kim won the tacky dressing contest.

South Carolina 83, LSU 77… a great game played by two of the best teams in the country this year… the lead changed hands several times. Some observations:
  • Raven Johnson was our difference maker, again. She was our best shooter from beyond the arc, had 8 assists to go with a career high 22 points.
  • Fulwiley had an excellent game for LSU. Game high 24 points, great assists, strong on defense, minimal turnovers, played 35 minutes. Her only weakness was her proclivity to shoot 3 pointers despite the fact that she’s not very accurate from beyond the arc (2 for 8 today).
  • Joyce Edwards played all 40 minutes… maybe a first for her.
  • Okot missed too many easy baskets beneath the rim, but tied for a game high 11 rebounds.
  • Latson had a strong game… very dependable at both ends of the court.
  • Tessa was subpar beyond the arc, but is proving that her offensive game is more than shooting 3s. Her defense has picked up lately, too.
  • We played only three off the bench, without much contribution except rest for the starters.
  • This was an important win: high quality opponent, gets us in the conference finals, and we won a close game despite falling behind from time to time. We didn’t choke under pressure. A confidence builder heading into the Big Dance.
 
One more thing… I was surprised not to see McDowell and Tournebize play. The only thing I can imagine is Dawn really wanted this one in order to eliminate any doubts that South Carolina is a #1 seed in the NCAAs, so she played her starters more minutes than normal. There was little margin for error… LSU played tough.
 
I was laughing really hard at Kim's halftime interview when she said this was "basketball played at the highest level." I'm sorry, but that is not what I saw. With the exception of Raven's exceptional game and Joyce's stalwart play -- those two are tremendous basketball players -- the game looked pretty ragged. Tessa, Tan'iya and Madina shot poorly, but LSU's defense didn't seem to have much to do with that. Jada Milaysia and Amiya shot well, which surprised me a bit. I kind of expected Raven and Tani'ya to shut Jada down and Madina to shut down Amiya. Of course, Milaysia is like a force of nature and a joy to watch, even if she torches her own team while making wonderful individual plays.

There are great playmakers on both teams and they can make some acrobatic baskets. But LSU spent so much time just pounding the ball on the perimeter waiting for a one-v-one opening. LSU seems barely to have an offense scheme beyond that. The boxscore says LSU got 16 assists, but that's hard to believe. I didn't keep count myself, but I can easily believe SC had 17, and Raven personally had 8, which was easy to see.

My conclusion is that SC endured some 'playground bully' ball from LSU in the first half, outplayed the Tigers in the 3rd quarter and held them off in the 4th. On to the next opponent.
 
Does anyone else see Jonquel Jones in Okot’s game? Similar size and frame, already competent from 3, more fluid and mobile than you’d expect. Her current is very good but her potential is sky-high.

She also has JJ’s inconsistency (I’m being facetious).
 
This board loves the 50/40/90 stat so I thought I would give a shout-out to Raven for shooting 51/41/84 so far this season! She is also averaging 5.4 assists/game and is #4 in the nation in assist to turnover ratio. Then on top of that she was the SEC DPOY!

Is there a better all-around PG in the nation this season?! The fact that she didn't make first team All-SEC is a disgrace.
