I don't think playing mop up minutes makes much sense to lose much of a year of eligibility. But if in practice she is performing better than Dauda and/or Tac, or is thrown into the potential rotation because of injury, then it seems to make sense for her to play this season, particularly with SC being a legitimate contender.

I suspect that her or Okeke was an either or situation, not both since multiple talented bigs could return next season.

You have to assume that she is not worried about starting the clock on her eligibility. Given that she has already been a pro, she probably is looking to SC as her "finishing" school before she declares for the WNBA. If she is as good as we hope she is, she might be looking to enter the draft sooner rather than later. She now has two years before she is eligible for the draft again?

She has played 7 games as a “pro” and averages 2 rebounds and 2 points per game.

I do know. And I’m not disagreeing that she likely faces a steep learning curve. That said I don’t think that is an apples to apples comparison. Have to assume she is playing against competition that is better than most college WBB. My comment is that she and her camp might not be worried about losing one year of eligibility.

Now that she’s going to college in the U.S., she has to abide by the usual WNBA entry rules. No WNBA before her 22nd birthday or she graduates college or 4 years have passed since her high school graduation (what we usually refer to as the junior year rule).

She will not be 22 until July 2029? By my math (sorry I was a liberal arts major) that will be four years if she gets the clock ticking this season.

I think so. As far as I know she's currently 18. I don't know her exact birthday. But it's an either/or thing.. so if she meets any of those qualifications I listed in my previous post then she can go to the WNBA. She doesn't have to meet all of them.. just one.

Had she continued playing pro ball in Europe (or anywhere internationally), then she would've been eligible for the WNBA at 20.

The key here is she’s been practicing and playing against pro players who are grown women who are training as professionals. Most mid-year enrollees have been playing against high school athletes and they are generally the best player on the floor most days.

I watched a few videos on this young lady. She is obviously lean. But in addition to being able to dunk with 2 hands, she has a pretty good shooting touch.

What I am confused about is her actual height. Initially reported at 6’4”, someone blogged in that she is 6’7”, which looks improbable from the video. Someone needs to get a measurement in Hartley units….. 🧐

According to Dawn she is taller than 6-6 Okote. We’ll see. I worry more about her weight/strength in The SEC this year.

When UConn brought in Jana midseason from Egypt a few years ago, they elected to redshirt her. I would not be surprised if SC does the same with Tournebize. That will give her some time to settle in and add some muscle for next season.

She used to be 6'4" but had a growth spurt recently and is now 6'7" as confirmed by Dawn Staley herself. Also, as a secondary confirmation, she was taller than Okot on her official visit and Okot is 6'6". It is confusing because she is still listed as 6'4" on her FIBA and other profiles but those haven't been updated.

I highly doubt that. Coach Staley has stated on Twitter that she is ready to play now. Also, I believe she was flirting with going straight to the W but decided otherwise, so I don't know how she would feel about redshirting. Coach Staley has only redshirted injured players in recent years. I can't remember the last time someone redshirted for developmental reasons.

It'll take some time to adjust but I think she'll be the first big off then bench in the post season.

Well, by playing college basketball, Tournebize lengthens the age that she will become eligible for the W from 20 (2 yrs) to 22 (4yrs). A redshirt year would not change that. If Dawn has made a commitment to playing Tournebize now, so be it.

1st Big off the bench ahead of Tac & Dauda?
