A few Depth Chart observations.
It appears our deepest position groups could be QB, TE and WR. You have to really like what we're bringing back at the first two positions and what we've added at WR. We're going to give DB's fits when these guys rotate in and out. Of course you never want to test that depth at QB if you have a proven starter.
OL is a questionmark. Starters should be able to hold their own against most opponents. We have some younger guys that can step in if needed but at what level? Interesting that the starting guards and tackles seem to mirror each other in terms of height and weight. We're not huge up front but I think at guard we're big enough and sometimes quickness is an advantage. Our Center doesn't drop off significantly in size which is good. When your center gets blown up all day your offense gets blown up with it.
RB seems solid. We have enough ability and experience to take advantage of blocking if it's there, shake off tackles and run past a few guys. It's not lightning speed but more than adequate.
Defense is where we see a larger influx of Portal guys. DL is the most obvious turnover group. Fortunately it's more of a plug and play position than some of the others. This is where you hope one or two guys step up as disruptors. I'll trust the Coaches have found some answers. We look deep but is there enough quality to rotate in the 2's to keep everyone fresh? That's important in a close game in the fourth qtr.
At LB and DB we see a lot of portal guys. Most are backups, for now. I think we've upgraded the talent and depth but the progress in learning the system has Coaches leaning towards the guys that have been here. When new guys learn their assignments I feel like we're going to see one or two move into starting roles.
No Frosh among the starters but one guy caught my eye while watching highlights was Suchanic. He is quick and seems to be like glue in one v one coverage. And no one seemed to get separation. Just highlights but if we do see a Freshman get some minutes I'd be fascinated to see what he can do.
I don't think this defense falls back from last year but early in the season the influx of new guys will be a challenge for the staff to manage. Once that's settled we should be tough and I don't think that big hole at LB exists as it did in recent years. DB could be our strength, but we'll need to scheme some pressure to take advantage of that.
Overall the talent level is probably equal to last year at the starting positions but depth should be better. In my mind we go as far as the OL takes us. But I think Coach Sammis has grown in all aspects and he'll have them prepared to their capabilities. The rest is up to their preparation and work output. In the portal era the old saying "that's why they play the games" has never been more true. It's really hard to know what you've got until they take the field.
