This game worries me. I think we are better than Air Force and should win but we lost after a tough game with Syracuse then after beating BC. I sort of wonder if we get up for the ACC games then have a hard time getting the same focus the following week against a lesser opponent. I think that might be behind Mora’s comment that there are no statement games, every game is its own entity. Trying to be sure his team doesn’t lose focus after a huge and exciting win over an ACC opponent and take Air Force a little for granted.

Agreed. We CANNOT afford to lose focus against Air Force. We are not that good, yet…

Agree. And I am worried for an additional reason. I saw maybe fifteen minutes of the Air Force vs. Navy game. Air Force lost, but they ripped through Navy on the ground like a hot knife through butter, as the saying goes. Those of us who were in our seats at the start of the game last Saturday will recall Duke's opening drive. I told my buddy "you watch, it will take Duke exactly three snaps to get into the end zone." And it did.

Air Force also has the potential to stun UConn. On the plus side, I am sure that the staff has reminded the guys that winning out likely means an awesome high profile opponent in whatever bowl they go to. The incentive is right in front of their noses.

On another topic, how many New England Air National Guard units are going to be flying over in Sunday's opening ceremony? I would certainly like to see Vermont's F35's. It would be a great advertisement for Pratt & Whitney as well.

Is there anyone on this board who could make a call or two? Someone in Lamont's office, Pratt & Whitney, Air National Guard, or UConn?

This will not be an easy game for UConn. Air Force has the #2 rushing offense and are ranked #5 in time of possession, #13 in 3rd down conversions, and #7 in 4th down conversion. In other words, you have to make plays to stop drives or they will march down the field and score. They average 33.1 points per game.

Fortunately, their defense is not good and are ranked #103 against the run, #134 against the pass, and #133 in total yards allowed per game. Opponents average 33 points per game.

Hopefully Brock learned something from playing Rice’s version of the triple option.

The 3-3-5 seems to be more effective against pass happy teams and struggles more against the run. On pass plays, the blitz packages and the players blitzing have some wiggle room on how to attack the QB.

On run plays, if the play call isn't good or if any player misses their gap assignment, there's a lot of running space. The time for an RB to hit the gap is quicker than the time for a pass play to break down.

We're going to need some turnovers or special teams plays to win this game. I agree with the earlier poster that our defense isn't great. We'd be undefeated if our defense was better. I'll be there screaming my throat raw.

Wonder if there is a surprise ahead... 4-3-4? or 3-5-3? Do we have it in us?

Possible? Sure. But I hope not.

At this point in the season you dance with the girl you brung, and put all the lipstick you can on that pig.
i never thought about it this way... that makes sense.
this is not the time to try new ideas and confuse the kids.

but i want to.... i hate the 3-3-5 so much lol

Joe has more than twice the passing yards as their QB, Liam Szarka. But Szarka has more rushing yards than Cam Edwards. Uh oh.

Think I agree that more bodies in the box might be a good thing, but not necessarily down linemen. A fourth LB perhaps, or even a fifth as has been suggested? I think agility and quickness will be key to attacking the option.

Lots of film study will have gone into this Defensive game plan. Run blitz's have to be accurately called in order for us to survive. Who will likely be coming from the back 5 to attack the line of scrimmage?

We tied Syracuse at 20 and Rice at 23. Neither loss was specifically on the defense. Delaware was.

We should be able to score at will. The question is as everyone has stated, can we slow down their rushing attack? This is a game where getting a lead is so important. Force them to play from behind and pass.

They are traveling cross country and the game starts at 10 am their time. Hopefully they won't be awake enough to move bodies repeatedly!

I know it's mot the nicest thing to say, but against these triple option, someone needs to pop the QB hard on every play.
Definitely an “option”. But I think you’d get flagged.
Another approach is to option the option. If you are the “read” for the QB. You continue down the line of scrimmage keeping the QB just inside your inside shoulder. This hopefully causes some indecision. The QB is trained to turn it up if the “read” bellies out or pitch if attacked. Any slight indecision allow your teammates to pursue.
It worked 50 years ago. Not sure it would work today.
