The UConn women will need to play much better this evening to leave Nebraska with a win against a tough offensive Creighton team (15-5/10-2) and keep their longstanding conference win streak alive. UConn coach Geno Auriemma was not satisfied with his team’s play Sunday at Providence, saying he “wasn’t pleased about anything with the way we played.” UConn's game at Creighton finishes a four-game road stint. The Huskies' next four games will be played in Connecticut. UConn hosts Butler in Gampel Pavilion Friday before finishing off non-conference play vs. No. 7 Tennessee Sunday at the XL Center. The Huskies host Villanova Wednesday, Feb. 9, at XL before finishing off the homestand vs. DePaul on Friday, Feb. 11, in Gampel.
Creighton has had the luxury of being difficult to scout this season, with a plethora of scoring options. The Bluejays have a player reach at least 20 points in nine contests, getting that total at least once from Carly Bachelor, Lauren Jensen, Morgan Maly and Emma Ronsiek. Ronsiek sits atop the scoring chart with 14.8 ppg, but fellow sophomores Lauren Jensen and Morgan Maly have are just a step back averaging 12.0 ppg and 11.9 ppg respectively.
The key to Creighton's attack is ball movement. The Bluejays enter Friday's contest as the NCAA leader in Assist-to-Turnovers (1.59) and Assists Per Game (20.8). Senior point guard Tatum Rembao stirs the drink for the Bluejays with 125 assists and a 3.38 Assist-to-Turnover Ratio (2nd in the NCAA). “They’re not an easy team to defend,” Auriemma said after the first UConn-Creighton game. “You’ve got to work really, really hard, and you’ve got to keep working. The minute you stop, they get a layup or they get an open 3.”
The Interior Game: Creighton outscored Connecticut in the paint and grabbed one additional rebound than the Huskies during the game in Storrs. A repeat of that effort will keep the Bluejays in range.
Speaking of range: While the Bluejays have thrived this season on the inside, Creighton was just 5-for-25 from beyond the arc at Connecticut. The Bluejays season low from long range is five, doing so in a pair of losses.
Belief: Against the Huskies one of the biggest hurdles is believing they can be beat. An eight-point loss in January left the Bluejays feeling that an opportunity was missed. When the teams first met on Jan. 9, UConn saw its 17-point advantage shrink to eight in the final minutes before pulling out a 63-55 win. Creighton has since gone 5-1, its sole loss to Villanova (74-64).
