GENERAL COMMENTS:
The Utes are 3 and 2. They average 72.6 points and 38.4 rebounds per game. They average 9 three pointers per game, led by Maty Wilke's 3.2 per game. They are somewhat turnover-prone, averaging 19 per game. Their RPI is 18, and their SOS is 6. So far this year, they have played teams with RPIs of 33, 56, 64, and 250, as well as teams with SOSs of 151, 186, 217, and 275. They also played Division II school Sioux Falls.
UConn is 5 and 0 after escaping a strong 2nd half attack by Michigan in game 4. The Huskies average 87 points (I told you it was going to be tough to keep UConn under 90 points per game), 43 rebounds per game. They also average an uncharacteristically low 8.0 three-pointers per game, led by Azzi Fudd's 3.8 per game. UConn, like Utah, holds its opponents to 60 points per game. UConn's current RPI is 4, and its SOS is 13. So far this year, UConn has played teams with RPIs of 25, 31, 81, 91, and 157. They have played teams with the following SOSs: 16, 52, 59, 157, 163.
Utah will start two forwards and 3 guards. They will play with two seniors, two juniors, and one sophomore. Their starting line-up will be 6'3", 6'1", 6'0", 5'10", and 5'9". UConn will likewise start 3 guards and two forwards. They will play with one graduate student, one senior, two juniors, and one super sophomore (Sarah Strong). The Huskies starting line-up will be 6'4', 6'2", 5'11", 5'10", and 5'9".
This game will also be at the Mohegan Sun Arena, and I believe UConn will flirt with scoring 100 points today... The starters should get some rest today, probably play close to 25 minutes and the bench should see more action in this game. I think everybody eats, and UConn will win this one easily. It will be interesting to see what kind of bounce-back game Michigan has, as they will also be playing at the Mohegan Sun.
PLAYER MATCH-UPS:
Serah Williams, 6'4" Senior Forward vs Chyra Evans, 6'3" Junior Forward - Chyra averages 10.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and just under 1 block per game. Serah is currently averaging 8.2 points, 3.6 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and just under 1 block per game. On paper, these two players appear to be evenly matched; however, Serah is more experienced and has played tougher competition.
SLIGHT ADVANTAGE - UCONN
Sarah Strong, 6'2" Sophomore Forward vs Reese Ross, 6'1" Junior Forward - Reese averages 6.4 points, 6.4 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and just under 1 block per game. Sarah is having a great year thus far. She is averaging 19.6 points, 11 rebounds, 5.2 assists, 3.2 steals, 2.9 blocks, and 1 three-pointer per game. There is just no conceivable way that this match-up could favor Utah ADVANTAGE - UCONN
Aaai Fudd, 5'11" Graduate Guard vs Lani White, 6'0" Senior Guard - Lani averages 12.4 points, 1.4 three-pointers, 6.4 rebounds, 1.0 assists per game. Azzi is enjoying last season at UCONN and is putting together an exceptional year. Azzi is averaging a team high 20.4 points, 3.8 three-pointers, 3.0 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 2.4 steals, and .6 blocks per game. ADVANTAGE - UCONN KK Arnold, 5'9" Junior Guard vs Brook Walker, 5'9", Sophomore Guard - Brook is averaging 6.8 points, 3.4 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.2 steals, and .6 three-pointers per game. KK continues to struggle with the offensive part of her game, but she is still the explosive spark on defense. KK is averaging 7.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 2.0 steals, and shoots the three ball at .6 per game. ADVANTAGE - UCONN
Ashlynn Shade, 5'10" Junior Guard vs Maty Wilke, 5'10" Senior Guard - Maty is Utah's most effective scorer, averaging 13 points, 3.2 three-pointers, 2.2 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.0 steals per game. Ashlynn will need to limit Maty's three-point shot. Ashlynn averages 6.6 points, 1.3 three-pointers, 3.6 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 1.4 steals per game. While Maty is a more effective scorer than Ashlynn is, Ashlynn slightly outperforms her in other aspects of the game, ie, rebounds, assists, and steals. I think Ashlynn's defense will keep Maty below her season averages.
ADVANTAGE - EVEN
BENCH:
Utah's bench brings 30.9 points and 16.6 rebounds to the game. UConn's bench will more than likely exceed its usual minutes, and therefore, it will probably overperform its season averages. UConn's bench will bring into the game 32.8 points and 16.8 rebounds. Given the expected extended bench minutes... ADVANTAGE - UCONN
COACHING:
UConn's proven coaching staff will get the job done. ADVANTAGE - UCONN
INTANGIBLES:
UConn is a very deep team, has more size than Utah, a very talented team, and has a home crowd advantage. ADVANTAGE - UCONN
SCORE:
UCONN - 92
UTAH - 51
MOV - 41
