Whar a great game UConn played against South Carolina. Yes Azzi was a monster but everyone did a great job. Paige just fell short of a triple-double. Post players Jana and Sarah did great. Bench did a great job too. Dawn and the Gamecocks didn’t know what hit them. In fact the entire women’s basketball world is recalculating where this season is going.

Due to the fact that I am traveling this week the game analysis for the next two games will be somewhat abbreviated. In the first meeting UConn handled the Pirates pretty easily handing Seton Hall a 60 point loss. Seton Hall’s lack of size was too much for them to contend with UConn. Sarah had 23 and Paige and Azzi had 18. Everyone ate that game. I hope that UConn doesn’t have a let down following what was sure to be an Adrenalin rush down in Columbia, South Carolina. I expect the starters will play limited minutes and the bench will have an opportunity to get in some significant playing time.

PLAYER MATCHUPS:

In the first match-up I’yanna had 5 points. Jana averages 5.4 points, 5.2 rebounds, 1 assist, .6 steals and .6 blocks per game. Jana had 2 points in game one. ADVANTAGE- SETON HALL

Sarah
Strong, 6’2” - Freshman - Forward vs Marsonious Faith, 6’1” - Graduate - Forward - Marsonious averages 15.7 points, 5 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 2 steals, and .4 blocks per game. Marsonious had 8 points in the first matchup. Sarah averages 16.1 points, 8 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 2.3 steals, and 1.4 blocks per game. She also averages 1.6 three-pointers per game. Sarah had 23 points in game one.
ADVANTAGE - UCONN

Paige

Jada had 14 points in game one. Paige averages 18.4 points, 4.3 rebounds, 4.6 assists, 2.1 steals, and .6 blocks per game. Paige also hits 1.9 three-pointers per game. Paige had 18 points in their first matchup. ADVANTAGE - UCONN

Azzi averages 13.4 points, 2 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 1.0 steals, 2.7 three-pointers per game. Azzi had 18 points in game one. Advantage- UConn

Thanks agains, Sensei!

Everything about this game depends on not having an emotional letdown. If Azzi continues her hot streak, I think it will be another 60 pt win. No one on SH can really stop her. One thing I'd really like to see is Jana build on her play against SC. She should be able to dominate Lops if she can do just that.

The first game was a 96-36 win that was not as close as the score suggests.

Eads and Masonius are their best players. They were a combined 8 for 30 with 14 turnovers in the first game. It will be important to shut them down again. Their supporting cast can't shoot a lick. Masonius was very frustrated by Sarah's defense.

Aubrey played a bit in that game but I suspect we will see a lot of her on Wednesday and that is not good news for Masonius either.

Last time twelve players played, and all twelve scored. Minutes ranged from 8 to 27 with 9 players getting between 15 and 22. (KK played 27.)

The goal should be to keep them under 40 points.

It is very important that we get our starters rest and keep them injury free. So against the Hall I expect to see more players get more time. I am hoping we run plays for Jana to keep her going and build her confidence. We need that going into tournament time. Jana in Egypt played alot on the outside. She has a pretty good outside shot and she has moves. We really didnt see them until @ SC. We need to build on that. Meanwhile we need to get our non starters more minutes. With Ice and Morgan out we need to get everybody else in the flow with the starters.

I respectfully disagree. I understand the mentality regarding injuries, but Geno finally has his rotation, strategy and player alignment in order and needs to oil the machine. That means plenty more playing time for Jana with the starters, timing the entry of Ash, KK and Aubrey and fiddling with the big lineup (Jana) and small lineup (Sarah). With Morgan and Ice out for a while the SC lineup success should 'lather, rinse and repeat' until operating by rote. Allie and Q will have their day in the sun, but not this year.

I'm so glad that more folks are finally aware that Jana has moves. I want to see more of that killa crossover. One of the things I've missed with Aaliyah's graduation is her drives down the lane and along the baseline. There's something wonderful and maybe a little frightening about someone that big moving quickly through the lane.

I find it interesting that Massey ratings prediction is only 76-54.
Aubrey should be excited playing at Seton Hall for the last time. I hope she has another "career" night.
BTW Has Aubrey had a "homecoming" game? Not sure what school would be considered a suitable place for someone from Ossining NY.

Are you sure this is Aubrey’s last year?

Based upon the roster grid that @BRS24 posted last week when Blanca Quiñonez signed, Aubrey is not eligible next season. She is a redshirt senior with 2019-2020 being her freshman year.
I'm not sure if she has covid eligibility next season tho. So...

Yes. She is ancient. ;) Hanging out with teenagers gets old at some point. Plus, she has nothing else to learn, basketballwise.

Tony, I agree and it's the reason for my less than outrageous MOV in the Prognosticators thread. Everyone plays. Everyone eats. No reason to run up the score. Let the starters shine for limited minutes, then challenge the bench to put the hammer down.

Saniya Chong was also from Ossining, so I checked her senior season (back in the days of the AAC) for a homecoming game and didn't find any likely candidates.

Seton Hall and St. John's are both just over an hour away from Ossining, so I guess being back in the Big East is one big homecoming for Aubs. :D

Nobody wants injuries but I think conditioning is more important than the risk of injury. At this point in the season I would be really honing my rotations and making sure I develop one more tool in my chest before tournament time. To the one thing that would help UConn down the road is building a post offense.

In last Wednesday's Seton Hall/Marquette game, Marquette's front line was waaaaaayyyyy too much for SH. It didn't help that SH seemed to have been hit by a bad case of flu (I guess) causing them to be missing a lot of players due to illness and leaving a few that played looking a bit under the weather.

I disagree. These young ladies are well conditioned athletes. Rest is not needed. The rotation Geno played Sunday against SC were not sucking wind. But the SC players were grabbing their shorts in the second half.

As to injuries, you have no control over injuries.

The rotation Geno used Sunday has to keep playing together as a unit. Plays for Jana that you desire will come as the 8 players continue to work as a unit. That did start on Sunday. Aubrey will become more integrated as we saw with Ash and KK and Sunday. Chances are very good that Ice ( probably out another 3 weeks at least) and Morgan will not play. That leaves Q and Allie. Q and Allie will get there minutes.

Here's what I know - Aubrey had a medical redshirt year for her back, and a COVID year. This is from the UC website -

2019-20 - frosh year
2020-21 - sophomore year
2021-22 - DNP (back surgery)
2022-23 - played redshirt junior year
2023-24 - played in 14 games before knee injury, which I believe is more than allowed to declare a redshirt eyar
2024-25 - redshirt senior year, however it's probably the COVID extra year

Wonderful for UConn, a little frightening for the opponents - both big and (especially the) small!!!

This is her COVID year because she already used her red shirt year when she was injured with her back injury and missed her junior year.
