GENERAL COMMENTS:

Game 15...we are already halfway through the regular season. So far, no Aubrey. Even though this game is being played at Villanova it should not be too difficult for UConn. Villanova brings its unique challenges. This is a guard-oriented team. They have 9 guards and two forwards in their regular rotation. Roughly, 50 percent of their scoring is done by their two young guards Jasmine Bascoe 15.6 points (Freshman) and Maddie Webber 12.1 points (Sophomore). They aren't a high-scoring team averaging only 65.6 points per game. That has translated into a 50 - 50 season where they have 7 wins and 7 losses. Their lack of size has hurt them on the boards as they are averaging 31.9 rebounds per game while their opponents are pulling down an average of 36.6 rebounds per game. Villanova will go with a 4 guard line up: Jasmine Bascoe (Freshman - Guard); Maddie Webber (Sophomore - Guard); Denae Carter (Junior - Forward); Maddie Burke (Graduate - Guard); Bronag Power-Cassidy (Graduate -Guard). UConn will enjoy a size advantage at every positional match-up.

RPI / SOS:

Villanova's - RPI = 52
Villanova's SOS = 8,

Villanova's opponents RPI are: 13, 27, 41, 42, 47, 57, 58, 60, 67, 90, 163, 171, 177, 298.
Villanova's opponents' SOS are: 15, 28, 47, 50, 65, 86, 99, 103, 134, 135, 171, 188, 244, 249.

UConn's - RPI = 5
UConn's - SOS = 3

UConn's opponents' RPI are: 9, 11, 16, 37, 53, 74, 82, 95, 98, 102, 114, 142, 157, 243.
UConn's opponents' SOS are; 15, 32, 41, 42, 75, 79, 100, 101, 143, 160, 183, 188, 241, 252.

PLAYER ANALYSIS:

Jana El-Alfy, 6'5" - Redshirt - Freshman - Center vs Denae Carter, 6'0" - Junior - Forward
- Denae is Villanova's best rebounder. She is a solid player who averages 9.3 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.3 Assists, 1 steal, and 1 block per game. She can step out and hit the three as she averages .7 threes per game. My concern here is that Jana stays out of foul trouble. Denae's speed around the basket could see Jana getting into foul trouble early. Geno is fortunate enough to have Ice and Morgan if Jana gets into early foul trouble. Jana is averaging 5.7 points, 5.1 rebounds, .7 assists, and .6 steals per game. In a straight-up match-up, Denae has the advantage...something tells me, however, that this is going to be an assignment by committee.
ADVANTAGE - VILLANOVA

Sarah Strong, 6'2" - Freshman - Forward vs Maddie Burke, 6'0" - Graduate - Guard
- Maddie Burke replaced Lara Edmanson in the line-up. She will have her hands full trying to keep up with Sarah and her chances of containing Sarah are about nil. Maddie averages 6.7 points, 3.0 rebounds, 1 assists, and 1 block per game. Maddie also averages 1.4 threes per game. Sarah thus far is having a great year and if it continues will be in the conversation for an All-American. Sarah is averaging 17.2 points, 8 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 2.3 steals, and 1.3 blocks per game. She also is averaging 2 three-pointers per game. ADVANTAGE - UCONN

Paige Bueckers, 6'0" - Redshirt Senior - Guard vs Maddie Webber, 5'11" - Sophomore - Guard
- Villanova has no answer for Paige and unfortunately for Maddie, she will not be able to get the job done. Paige is an All-American playing in her last season and now with another 3-point shooter in Azzi Fudd on the floor, it frees her up to play a more open and free game. Maddie is going to get run ragged chasing Paige around. Maddie averages a respectable 12.1 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1 steal, and hits 1.4 three-pointers per game. Paige is arguably one of the best all-around players in the country. She averages 20.3 points, 4.4 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 2.0 steals, and hits 2 three-pointers per game.
ADVANTAGE - UCONN

Azzi Fudd, 5'11" - Graduate - Guard vs Bronag Power-Cassidy, 5'10" - Graduate - Guard
- Azzi is rounding back into shape after returning to the starting line-up from her injury. Bronag averages 8.1 points, 2.4 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and also hits 1.4 three-pointers per game. Azzi's numbers will begin to dramatically increase as the season moves forward. She is currently averaging 8.3 points, 2.1 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals, and is averaging 2 three-pointers per game. ADVANTAGE - UCONN

Kaitlynn Chen, 5'9" - Graduate - Guard vs Jasmine Bascoe, 5'7", Freshman - Guard
- Jasmine is Villanova's freshman prodigy and their best scorer. She is quite the little dynamo at 5'7". She is somewhat of a stat-stuffer and I am not sure that Kaitlyn will be able to contain her. Jasmine averages 15.6 points, 4.6 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and two steals per game. She also averages 1 three-pointer per game. I expect Geno will go to his bench for KK and/or Ashlynn and will not let Kaitlyn get too far behind Jasmine. As the match-up stands I would give the Advantage to Villanova but I believe that this match-up will end up in the hands of KK Arnold before the game is finished. Because of UConn's depth at this position and because of the intense defense I expect to see from our three guards on Jasmine I will go with: ADVANTAGE - UCONN

BENCH:

For the most part, Villanova has a very weak bench If Lara Edmanson is a "no-go" on Sunday, I just don't know where Villanova is going to get points from. UConn will bring 25.8 points and 12.1 rebounds off the bench while Villanova will bring 8 points and 5.9 points.
ADVANTAGE - UCONN

COACHING:

Geno, Chris, Morgan, Janelle and Tania got this one...too much experience, and they have been there and done that.
ADVANTAGE - UCONN

INTANGIBLES:

UConn is too big, too experienced with too much talent to allow playing on a visitor's floor to affect their chance of winning this game. UConn has been ramping up its defense lately and I expect them to build off of that. This team has bought into that good defense leads to scores down the other end.
ADVANTAGE - UCONN

SCORE:

UConn - 87

Villanove - 52
MOV - 35

I watched a replay of Seton Hall-Villanova yesterday. ‘Nova is small and unathletic. I’m guessing Geno will be tinkering with lineups and getting young players some on-court experience on Sunday.

Oh, and Seton Hall won 56-55

This will be another learning game for Uconn players. Everybody will play minutes and become a more cohesive team on the floor.. I believe the game will be over by half=time and the bench will take over. Every body eats. Another ho-.hummer. I HOPE TO SEE AUBREY PLAY, as i can't wait to see her play. Aubrey is the spark we need to get where Uconn wants to go. GO HUSKIES!!!!

Thank you again, Sensei!

I saw what @HuskyNan saw in that seton hall game. Villanova will not be able to keep up physically with our starting rotation. I also expect to see the bench get a lot of minutes.

Also Maddie Burke is the only returning rotation player and she’s experienced the challenge of playing UConn several times. For the others, it may come as a bit of a shock. Jasmine Bascoe is fun to watch, but I think Kaitlyn and KK are more than capable of giving her a miserable afternoon.

You may be right that the most interesting challenge is for Jana against a smaller quicker post player. I hope she makes the most of this occasion.

I hope we get to see good minutes from Morgan Allie and Q. This is their chance to show what they can do.

Thank You , Again, Sensei!
Bottom line is Villanova is NOT TALL, LUCY
OLSEN is doing well in IOWA, and UCONN needs
an opponent like the WILDCATS for GENO to
again work on his starting lineup and ROTATIONS!
I will be watching less of the score and more
which players are on the floor at the same time and
how the chemistries work out. I hope JANA has
another step forward and the AZZI, Paige, and ASH
have solid games with Morgan providing some
information of whether she will contribute as a
GUARD or as a FORWARD... LET THE GAME BEGIN!!

I have to give Villanova credit for scheduling. They’ve played some decent teams and done ok. Maybe they’re scrappier than I saw yesterday.

Thanks for the highlight video of Baylor vs Villanova. Interesting.
My thought was that the Huskies will defend the perimeter a lot
better than the Baylor Bears (maybe). KK and the full court press
will be another variable on the UCONN side of the equation. Maddie
Burke for Villanova was quite hot from beyond the arc (I did not
check her stats, however... beware of highlight reels for truly "reality
based" impressions!). UCONN VS VILLANOVA will be a nice
test of GENO's refinements to the UCONN rotation schemes.

I hope you’re right. Q is one of my favorite characters on the team and it’s disappointing seeing her get 3 minutes in blowouts. Hopefully the game is blown open in the 1st half and Geno goes deep into the bench early.
I hope we get to see good minutes from Morgan Allie and Q. This is their chance to show what they can do.
