Definitely worth at least the Flagrant 1 foul that was (eventually) called. I'm really glad that Gabulous is OK.

If we lose Gabulous we're in trouble given Saniya's on and off availability and now seeing a specialist, Ekmark being a work in progress, Butler still too sore to play, DJB gone. The team isn't tremendously deep at this point.

The team will be fine in March when it counts. Maybe better than expected because everyone will have a chance to play a lot and Geno gets to fine tune different combinations.

Looking at the play, there is no way the foul on UConn should have been happened because it occurred after the hit on Gabby, basically giving LSU a fast break basket. I get that the refs might not have seen what caused Gabby to be on the floor, but the review should have allowed the refs to declare that UConn foul was LSU getting an improper advantage. Obviously her health was the chief issue and the basket made no difference in this particular game. Edit: Upon further review, the ref on the near side line should be suspended. He was looking directly at the throw down.

The rules do not allow them to do what you suggest. Nothing that happened before the video review can be nullified.

cohenzone beat me to it, but I totally agree. Not sure what the rule is, but once the flagrant foul was called the subsequent foul on UConn should have been wiped from the books. The officials clearly erred not calling the initial foul on Maryland's Bethel, which led directly to the followup foul on Collier.

I know, just saying that should be the rule. And that ref clearly blew it. That slam took a few seconds to play out b

Thanks. As you can see I wondered the same thing. A flagrant foul that is initially unseen by the officials should not open the door to some post foul advantage for the team committing the foul. Admittedly it would be a rare occurrence, but what if the game was tied with seconds remaining and the play had resulted in a 3 point basket or 3 pt play?

I echo those sentiments. I too hope that Gabulous is OK. UConn can not afford to lose her for an extended period of time.

I may be in the minority here, But I thought it should be a flagrant 2, and the offending player ejected. Throwing another player to the floor is not a minor foul. When you throw a player to the ground, THAT is a major foul, which can cause injury, and evolve into a scrum, or a fight.

Reviews of the play clearly showed that the LSU player held Gabby's leg, then harshly and deliberately threw her leg to the ground. I guess I'm not understanding of just where the line (flagrant 1 vs 2) is drawn on that type of foul.

Another observation: Over the past several years, UConn has been blessed not to have any major or season ending injuries to any of its starters (Tuck was not a starter).

For the first time in a long time, last night Geno's bench was extremely thin. Save Williams, Geno was down to the end of his bench. Lucky for UConn, they were playing a team that also had several players rehabbing injuries, and unavailable to play.

A quick perusal of UConn's available bench revealed: Williams, Chong, Lawler, Pulido and Ekmark. I'm guessing that Chong would only have been used in an emergency. Based on comments and reports relayed by BY'ers and the UConn web site, Chong's IT Band Syndrome injury is very serious and painful. It's not the type of injury that just "goes away". The SNY TV broadcasters last night said that she is seeing a specialist.

Hopefully she will be able to play limited minutes when the team resumes play on December 28 against Maryland. The 6 day Christmas break is coming at the perfect time. Stewart should have recovered by then, and hopefully Natalie Butler will finally be ready to make her long awaited debut.

Merry Christmas to ALL of my fellow Bone yarders. You guys are the best.
I hope Santa brings you everything on your wish list. :)

I saw the video and wondered if Gabby was able to come back into the game. This may be in another thread, but is she OK? I hope that no damage was done.

How did Williams leg get that high since she was not jumping? It looks as if she kicked her leg up into the LSU player that was jockeying for rebounding position.

Not to imply that it makes it OK for the LSU player to throw her to the ground, but it looks like Williams was using a leg kick to block that player from getting a rebound.

It was close to the end of the game, I don't think she came back...

She didn't get back in, but was seen laughing about it a few minutes later and said she was OK. Her leg was raised because she was lurching forward to grab the loose ball. The LSU kid maybe didn't like her trailing leg up in her face and decided to remove it. Gabby was off balance as it was and was likely going to fall forward on her own in diving for the ball.

Ridiculous observation! She jumped for the rebound and landed awkwardly on her left leg causing her right leg to rise to about waist high on Bethel, who then proceeded to grab the leg and throw Williams down. It's a bit difficult to see because it's at the bottom of the video, but exactly at the 31 second mark Gabby's leg is waist high, she's clearly somewhat off balance and Bethel's arm is grabing the underside of Gabby's leg.

Yea, yea, that's it, Williams was using her leg to box out the other player. Not sure why other players don't use this technique.

I don't see it the same way. Her leg goes much higher than just to gain balance. To me, that looks like an intentional kick into the LSU player's space. To me it looks like her leg went almost chest high.

It looks like she got jostled from behind while she was preparing to leap, which caused her to do a sort of half-jump attempt, half balance check with the leg kicking out (while still trying to grab the rebound, which didn't help with the balancing act). Her leg got hooked while it was still ascending - I doubt it would have gotten up to head height if not for that.

Maybe because it could result in getting throw to the ground?

Anyway, just the way I saw it.

To me it looked like her leg unintentionally went up around waist high by itself. But the LSU player's arm hooked under it accidentally, as part of going up for the ball, and she lifted it up to about head high. Then, in frustration of having her rebound attempt interfered with by Gabby's leg, the LSU player twisted the leg and threw her to the ground.
