A back home article about Gabby, UConn, and attempting to qualifying as a track athlete in the high jump for the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

She mentions that track [Olympics] won't be a part of her UConn career....and that she may well take a run at the high jump after she graduates....sounds great to me.

Very nice article. Will be interesting to see how she does this next year.

Nice find ...
And just want to point out that this young highly ranked star coming out of high school seems pretty happy with her freshman year even though she 'only' got 15 minutes a game and much fewer in the important games. Even if there are a few HS girls who are concerned about their freshman minutes, those are not typically the ones Uconn goes after.

Interesting tidbit toward the end about her surgically-repaired knee still being behind the other good knee (which makes total sense of course) and that this is to be expected to persist for some time. Reason I say it's interesting is that there were also some quotes from Gabby and, IIRC, her dad last fall to the effect that she was jumping even better now - more explosively - than she was prior to the injury. I originally took that as implying that the surgeon's excellent technique and the advanced rehab and strength training available to her as a proto-Husky gave her a net increase in performance compared to how she was in the past. Now it seems more likely that they were comparing the performance of the newly rehabbed knee (operation #2) to the performance of the same knee after it had been rehabbed from operation #1 -- not to how it was before she had any injuries whatsoever.

In any event, I'm thrilled that she was able to get through the whole year under Amanda's watchful eye, strengthening and getting used to the post-rehab state of her knee from a mental POV. Usually, it takes players a fair amount of time even after their knees are physically healed before they really trust the knees and begin to move around naturally, without worry or second guessing.

After the South Carolina game, when Gabby was asked if she was disappointed that she barely played, she replied:

"I didn't talk to him about it. I don't think the right way to go is to beg him for playing time. That's not the kind of behavior this program wants. All I can do is find a way to get him to trust me. I understand you have to wait your time, make way for the experienced players."
"But at the same time, I'm not going to be satisfied to just sit on my butt and wait for it to happen. I'm going to do what's necessary to change it."

Isn't it refreshing to have players who get it, who don't pout, but instead just work harder?:)

When I first saw the SI cover, I was thinking the same thing for Polly.

I'm guessing that this was something she hadn't imagined would ever happen to her.
Polly's in the foreground. Her grandchildren will hear about that photo. :)
