Interesting article on espn today. In sum, Ohio State has decided they will need to upgrade schedule going forward. Here is an excerpt:

The days when Ohio State regularly entertained a Mid-American Conference school may be coming to an end because of the new FBS playoff system. Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith said the four-team FBS playoff may mean fewer games against MAC teams.

"We're changing our philosophy because we're obviously going to move into a playoff structure that I don't think all of us really understand yet, how the committee's going to work," Smith said earlier this week. "Many of us are assuming it's going to work similar to the (NCAA tournament) basketball committee, so your non-conference schedule will come into consideration as they evaluate whether or not you're going to be one of those final four teams."

This could be a good thing for UConn as more schools will be looking for what they perceive to be winnable but legit D1 games and may lead schools to look to schedule a UConn going forward. If nothing else, it certainly suggests we need to step up our own schedule.

It may or may not be good for UConn. My fear is that schools looking for a playoff bid don't schedule anyone OOC but teams from the other power conferences. But we'll see.

Having said that, there are only 15 programs or so that really are thinking "top 4" when they prepare their schedules anyway. Most programs will still be thinking "wins" and "bowl eligibility."

I hate to be the one pointing this out but to use a basketball comparison, would a game against a school from a major conference that often was knocked off by mid majors wouldn't necessarily help a tournament resume. Until we can demonstrate that scheduling us would be better for SOS than scheduling WMU (or any directional MU) we may have a difficult time convincing an OSU to schedule us (especially as the directional MU would have no problem playing all games in that series in Columbus while our fan base would be offended by a 3-1).

Yeah you'd have to prove that you can consistently rank higher in the computers than MAC teams to actually steal their games.
