We had $1.5 million in NIL last off season on short notice with a goal of $2.5 million for next portal cycle.

With the success of this season, renewed program interest, and the more systematic approach of Bleeding Blue for Good/Storrs Central (to say nothing of the D’Amelio group) I think we more than get there, and I think our recruiting takes another big step forward.

Is this thinking pie in the sky?

No. They had a successful proof of concept this season. It showed that investment will produce some good results. I think it will grow.

I’m not sure how much money from crowd sourcing we would get. It sounds like it’s the generosity and largesse of a few really great donors. I think it’s a more fulfilling contribution than redoing a locker room or something.

Definetly and Uconn needs to make it easily accessible to all fans, not everyone is up to speed with todays technology and the times.

I think we'll see a jump in NIL this year. Like you said, this year showed investing translates to immediate results. I'm not saying we'll be a world beater, but there's no reason UConn can't be in the top 25 consistently and sneak into the playoffs a couple times.

Has anyone received any professional advice on the tax treatment of donations?

It’s not pie in the sky thinking because this is the only way we can compete with the P4. NIL support helps level the playing. I encourage everyone to contribute what they can. We cannot only rely on a few big donors.

The question then becomes, how quickly can these programs be built and funded in comparison to the bidding that will go on for the talent everyone is seeking. I see a cluster for the first order coming along at many places.

You are 100% correct. If fans want us to win P4 games then support NIL. Whatever you can afford.

That said, I can think of any number of charitable causes, some of them at UCONN, that I would consider before handing over money so that young people can get paid as professional athletes. It's just not a charitbable cause that interests me.

UConn doesn’t control NIL. It’s called Bleeding Blue for Good. Independent from UConn.

If the NIL Collective is a 501(c)(3), the donations are tax deductible. For UConn, Bleeding Blue for Good is a 501(c)(3) and D'Amelio's Collective is not. BBfG does charitable work and the athletes get compensated.

That said, the IRS is scrutinizing this and could change their view. Some charitable gift funds (Fidelity) will not allow you to donate to a Collective.

Let me explain Bleeding Blue for Good. It’s a non-profit that supports UConn NIL. Any athlete that gets paid via B.B.Good does charitable work and is expected to give their time back to community groups. Check out their website.

Also, it’s fine if you don’t agree with this type of giving but you can’t expect UConn FB to compete with the big boy schools. Unfortunately, that’s todays reality.

Very reasonable post. Thank you. And you are exactly right, it is today's reality and speaking for myself as a fan, it's not a model that interests me. I don't think it is where institutions of higher learning should be seeking to have resources allocated.

You’re welcome. Many people don’t like this new reality so you’re not alone. College athletics is a big business at the highest level. Also keep in mind the NIL we’re discussion are not University resources, rather it’s money from independent collectives such as Bleeding Blue for Good. That said, in the very near future schools will be able to pay athletes directly as well. We can all decide to become fans of the Ivy League because they do the “student-Athlete” model the best.
