The Athletic's draft analyst Sam Vecenie wrote a very complimentary paywalled article about Jacob Furphy. Looks like you can subscribe for a free trial to his Substack to read the article, or there's a 25 minute video analyzing Furphy's game that I was able to watch without signing up for a paid subscription.

@HooperScooper do your magic

Vecenie has been high on Furphy for a couple years now. I'm all for it. I feel like it's so rare to see a journalist taking a strong stance these days unless it's just to get views online.

Furphy's shot to prove he has what it takes starts in 4 hours.

Wait... only listed as 6'3"? I thought he was 6'5"?
Live, he looked about 1" shorter than Mullins. Agree that I thought he was more of a wing, I think he's a guard.

Love Sam, but I do think there is some Australian bias in his take. For one, it really looks like Furph needs to condition a bit, build some strength. He has a spaghetti limbed quality about him.

He had me convinced Tyrese proctor had more talent than a role player. He’s more exposed to the Australian pipeline than any other basketball reporter/analyst/scout, so it makes sense he’s early on Furphy.

He's a shooting guard who can facilitate as well (saw al little of both in U19). So he is Solo's backup tonight for rest or foul trouble, etc if it's a position for position insertion.

But we will have Stewart start for a 2 guard (Demary and Ball) backcourt. Less than an hour, let's go!

I see the same things Sam does, and I like them. He had a really nice pass last night that showed really good vision from a 6'6" wing.

We'll just have to see how the athletic limitations hold him back. Hurley compared him to Cam Spencer in one of the previews I consumed, but said basically he was like Cam Spencer in his 2nd year at Loyola. The implication being that he needs to overcome a few things to become a beast at the high major level. Cam didn't get to Rutgers until he was a senior and 5th year a star at UConn. He probably would've been a solid high major player his junior year at Loyola.

Good take - sounds about right. As a bigger kid than Cam, could see his growth accelerate a bit faster. I'm sure Dan Hurley has him studying Cam tape.

Sam was clear about his bias regarding Furphy because he follows the Australians closely, but if you paid attention to what Sam said about his conditioning you'd believe, as I do, that Sam is also realistic about where Furphy is today.
But, his praise for Furphy's intellect (BB IQ anyway), ability to see the floor and recognize what's about to happen is what excites me about his potential. Excellent shooter (40% before the last two games in the FIBA tournament), sees the floor, anticipates and makes plays that fit the circumstances.
Can't wait to see him develop this year and look forward to what he may bring in his time here. There have been some pretty good players that haven't looked like body builders but he does need to work on conditioning based on how his shooting fell off over the seven games in the FIBA tournament.
