Furman season schedule and results.

Q1: 0-1
Q2: 0-2
Q3: 5-5
Q4: 14-4

Top games were against High Point (Net 75), Northern Iowa (Net 72) and Illinois State (Net 95).

Lost by 26 to High point, 16 to N. Iowa and 7 to Illinois State. Those were 3 of their first 8 games of the year.

Other NET top 150 teams they played: Troy (L by 3, Net 125), East Tenn St (L by 4 L by 9. W by 15, Net 140.)

Others from 151-200: Queens (W by 11, Net 189), Harvard (W by 10, Net 151), Mercer (W by 2, L by 5. Net 182).



So they played two NCAAT teams and went 0-2, both 12 seeds. Not sure there is a lot you can take from their schedule, or results besides they weren't very good this year but played well in their conference tournament. They have good height but not much heft.

Watched Furman’s SoCon championship game against ETSU last night. A couple thoughts from that game.

  1. The offense ran through 6’11 Cooper Bowser. Pretty much exclusively works in the paint and has a nice post game and touch. He’s going to give up a ton of bulk to Tarris, who has been excellent at keeping his man out of the deep post this year. Bowser is the only real post threat on the offensive end.
  2. The rest of the offense seems to flow through their 6’5 freshman PG Wilkins. He did not play well in this game. Takes tons of contests shots and was very loose with the ball (3.6 TO per game in the season and 4 this game). He’s tall but slight and doesn’t really use his size to bully people. Demary and Malachi’s pressure defense should be disruptive. Hes the guy that can go off for 20+ if he’s locked in so they’ve got to play excellent defense.
  3. The other guys seem largely to be there for spacing. Most on the perimeter and trying to get drive and dish or pick and pop 3s. They do a good job of making the extra pass to swing the ball around but doesn’t seem to be any real threats to get to the rim consistently and force contact. They start another 6’11 player (Johnston) but he pretty much exclusively stands the perimeter on offense.
  4. Defensively, I think they’re a perfect matchup for us. Basically no pressure at all and Bowser is not a rim protector. He doesn’t foul much but also doesn’t really contest aggressively. IMO if Reed’s head is right, he’s going to feast. I think they’re going to have to aggressively double and deny Reed, which will open up other guys. They start two 6’11 guys but Bowser seems to play the traditional 5 defensively. I could easily see quick foul trouble with them trying to deal with Reed’s power, so will be interesting to see how they play the matchups.
  5. Half their shots came from 3 and they only shot 15 FTs. That’s even more than their season average. They just do not drive and initiate contact. Honestly, kind of a poor man’s version of our offense without nearly as many actions.
  6. They were +12 on the boards but had a significant height advantage in the game (ETSUs two tallest starters were 6’8). They won’t have that same size advantage against us.
  7. Bench goes 3-deep, all 6’6 or 6’7. They don’t seem to really bring any different looks from the guys that start. Mostly stand around the perimeter.
Our bigs both have great matchups against Furman and I expect tons of looks from Furman to double and deny. They’ve got to be ready to kick that ball out and find the open man. Excited to see what Solo/Mullins/Karaban can do against far less off-ball pressure and I think this game sets up real nicely for Ross to be a major pest defensively, plus the lack of ball pressure should open up offensive opportunities for him. The key is going to be running all their shooters off the line and our bigs bottling up Bowser.

When you look at our results for the year, keep in mind that for the first half, we have three and sometimes four of our starters out with injuries. Heck, one game we started three freshman, taking away the planned redshirt for Cole Bowser. We are finally healthy and playing our best ball of the season. For those of you that love the game of basketball, I encourage you to watch the attached press conference from last night. There is no doubt Bob Richey is one of the best young coaches in America. Coach Richey does it the old school way, building a program and building the young man. For mid-major schools, this time of year is why we support our teams. Never take what you have at UConn for granted. For us, we live for three games in March at the conference tournament. Good luck. The Paladins are coming!

My question is about Wilkins. He seems to be by far your most important player and I was reading this morning that his 34.4% usage rate is the highest among any player participating in this year's NCAA Tournament. We have a PG who is an extremely good defender in Silas Demary. If he takes Wilkins out of the game do you think the Paladins have any chance of beating UConn?

Wilkins is the best freshman player I’ve seen play in person in a long time, and that includes Steph Curry when he was at Davidson. I saw Curry play several times. Wilkins can do it all. He can drive, dish it off, finish short shots, mid range and 3 pointers. His defensive game has improved and so has his number of turnovers. With all the injuries, Wilkins had a lot of pressure on him and he performed well under that pressure. Being realistic, beating UConn will be difficult whether Wilkins is taken out of the game, or not. But we are healthy and we are hungry, and we have the best young coach in America leading the way. This team expects to win the game.

P4 teams will not play us, including Clemson and S. Carolina. The last time we play the Gamecocks, we beat them 79-60. The last time we played Virginia, we beat them. P4 teams want no part of the Furman Paladins, or any good mid-major team for that matter.

They didn't just shoot and make a lot of 3s, their center is pretty good and they're comfortable attacking the rim. These guys aren't going to be a pushover. Reed can't sleepwalk through this one.

Fortunately, they gave up a lot to the ETSU center early on, and we should be able to feast inside.

I can see the Furman coach do what Creighton did both games and pack in the paint and dare UConn to make 3s (not quite, but they didn't want any easy baskets inside the paint near the hoop). In the first game, UConn crushed it from distance and in the 2nd game at Gampel they were okay and then went on a cold spell between the 11 min mark and the 3 min mark. Creighton figured they can't stop Reed 1-on-1, but if they can catch UConn on an off shooting day and they themselves get hot, that will give them the best chance to win. I can see Furman trying to replicate something similar to this.
 
I could care less about Furnan. If we can’t beat Furnan. What are we even doing. UConn should roll them by 30. If we don’t, we’ll likely take a 2nd round exit.
 
I just read on CTInsider that their guard, Alex Wilkins, has the highest usage rate (frankly I don’t understand this stat other than it seems to mean they rely on him heavily for production) of any participating player in this tournament.

With that being said, and I know lineup suggestions are often scoffed at in-season (by myself included), I feel like why not just start Ross over Mullins with the singular assignment of face guarding Wilkins, take him completely out, and then allow the should-be blowout to just fall into place. Obviously whatever Hurley does is a better idea than my suggestion, and I truly don’t believe Furman has more than a miracle shot at winning, but I just watched the last 30 seconds of Furman vs. Virginia 2023 and can’t help but imagine being in the regrettable position Virginia was in.
