SBNation's blogger had a lot of time on their hands, and came up with a national promotion/relegation scheme for CFB. The setup: four top-level leagues (Pac, B1G, B12 and uh, ACC). Then the tier II leagues (MWC, CUSA, MAC and uh... Big east). With 7 tiers going all the way down to NAIA. But before you fret about UConn, take a look at the year-by year projections (based roughly on sagarins) of what events might have unfolded if relegation had been implemented starting in 2005. UConn ends up in the top flight (ACC) and BC ends up relegated to Tier II (Big East). (also enjoyable: Cuse getting relegated to Tier III in 2007, same year UConn wins promotion, and Rugers never earning promotion to the ACC). Not scientific by any means but fun to think about, and there's a decent argument for why promotion/relegation is a better system than backroom realignment, even if it would NEVER happen.

Funny you brought this up. CFB was the only sport in which I could imagine this being a possibility. In all the major sports, you couldn't relegate a team due to stadium size, etc....there's no way you'd relegate the Pirates and promote The Rochester whoever's....however, with there slowly becoming a 4 conference hierarchy, you could, in essence, promote and relegate the CFB teams. It would never happen but it'd be fun to watch! Relegation is one of the things I really like about soccer. It makes the season matter all year long for EVERY team.
