No one knows where she is going and she has not visited Uconn in 15 months. Her mother went to Tenn and she has made 4 visits there in the last year. The recruiting class of 3 coming in will have negative impact on recruiting in 2013 with exception of the guard from NY. Girls today want to play and have their impact. Having said this great players like Diamond know that they will be successful at UConn. However, I feel she will follow her Mother to Tenn.
We shall see....
As other posted have mentioned, I think you're seriously underestimating the impact that UT's current difficulties are having on the 2013 class, and overestimating the impact of having 3 very talented players already committed from 2012.
MoJeff is a PG, and potentially a very good one - DD has said she wants to play with a great PG so between Bria and MoJeff she's pretty well covered, not to mention the possibility of Saniya Chong, whom you also alluded to. Then you have BStewart - a very different kind of player than DD, and one I would think would pretty complementary on the court with a player like DD. Neither of these two are likely to compete directly for minutes with DD. Lastly you have Morgan Tuck. Still seems like a different kind of player, though I suppose you could argue that like any top-notch forward, she could compete with DD for minutes depending on the substitution patterns, especially when Stewart is on the floor at the 4. And certainly KML will be a star and will see a lot of time at the 2-3, but in my opinion this is the kind of player that DD could co-exist with very nicely....
This is all guesswork of course about the future, contrasted with the very real problems happening *today* at UT, and which are likely to linger for awhile going forward. With Kaela pulling back the way she did--and given Maria's opinion that it's pretty much over between KD and UT--the pot has really been stirred up. Who is going to replace Pat? If it's someone on the current staff (doubtful, IMO) how much is that going to invigorate their 2013 recruiting efforts? We'll see how the rest of the season plays out, but I bet that would be a net negative, not a positive. If it's someone from outside, then who? Many names have been bandied about--many in the UT family tree and some not. But in the world of WCBB, there's Pat & Geno and then there's everybody else. Meaning, at least as far as
early perception goes, UT is going to be taking a step down as far as coaching goes. Not sideways, and certainly not up.
Only down.
Now, it's certainly possible that whoever they bring in as the new, permanent head coach (next year or whenever) could have great results and go gangbusters for the LV's, leading them back to the FF and NC contention! But they are losing a fair bit of talent next year, and now KD isn't likely to come, so this is far from a given despite having very good talent overall (Burdick, Simmons, Ariel, Graves, and others). So the 2013 class will either be verballing before next year's situation solidifies, or waiting to see how next year goes and committing later in the process. Given these possibilities, it looks to me like the chances of turning the recruiting tide back in a positive direction for the
2013 class are pretty slim.
Yes, DD has multiple close connections to UT. But at this point, KD was practically considered "family" and look what's happened there. I also remember a couple of things DD said last year, and to paraphrase, she wants to be the next Maya Moore. Obviously she can do her best to make that happen anywhere she goes, but........where better to do that than Storrs, CT?
Lastly, and particularly for those recruits whose mothers or fathers were professional athletes, I think the attraction of the Connecticut program has taken a
really big step forward in the past four years in two important ways: 1) the unparalleled visibility their daughters will have on the national stage if they play on a dominant UCONN squad, which upcoming squads have fantastic chance at being; and 2) the perception that Geno and his staff know not only how to attract top talent but how to push and develop these players to
maximize their potential. Whether you personally agree or not, I think that if you polled a bunch of sportswriters and pundits around the country today, they would say that a lot of great talent has been
underachieving lately at UT, and that this has been the case since CP left. For a high school girl with her heart set on being a LV, this isn't an issue, but for top recruits and parents taking a more pragmatic view (i.e. KD), it's a huge issue, especially those with pro athletes in the family, alumni ties notwithstanding.
