From what I saw last night

i'm sure we won't do any practicing against the press at all between now and wednesday....
“I think it was maybe first time seeing it, having a big lead, game pressure, some bad decision-making, not attacking the pressure,” Hurley said. “I just thought we got tentative, and that’s not gonna be a problem for this team.”

“It’s a weird feeling because we had a chance to really put on a 40-minute, great performance, but it’s also early in the year and teams improve throughout the year as the season goes on. Maybe over the next couple of weeks we’re able to sustain 30 minutes of that, then 33 minutes of that level and then 37 minutes of that level. As the season goes on, you improve, players get better, the team gets better, and we’ll be able to put forth more of a 40-minute effort, if that makes sense,” Hurley said. “But it was a big win for us to get. I think they’re gonna have a great year and it obviously creates an even bigger game on Wednesday.”

I saw a deep, talented and tough team with unlimited potential and I'm excited to watch us play all the top competition this upcoming season

And as with most UConn teams for the last 40 years, I know they're going to be a lot better on March 15th than they are on November 15th

It's tradition

I think it’s interesting how our team showed this amazing GRIT to survive a furious comeback led by what might end up being the best college freshman in recent memory and somehow there’s a negative for us?

I was at the game. UConn played BYU and the refs for most of the game and still came out on top.

We are so spoiled as fans. So spoiled.

I love everything about what I saw Saturday in person!

What I saw was Grit, gritty and a top 5 team playing without what might end up being our best player by April.

From what I saw, I'd be very nervous stepping on the floor with this UConn team. I saw two "spare" wings shut down the best player in the country for a half, with one of them nailing threes and driving to the rim for a highlight slam. I'd be scared that when teams are not allowed to push off and elbow people in the gut that this team is even more terrifying. An then there's the part where one of the best fresh freshman in the country returns.

Just curious, who were the refs. Were they BIG12 refs? I hadn't seen them in recent memory.

They were certainly calling phantom fouls, and I'd never seen so many out of control drives that were rewarded. You bull into someone without even trying to avoid contact and you're somehow rewarded as though the defender is supposed to give you a free path to the hoop. Or you shove them away with an extended offhand and it's OK. Basically the offensive player can do anything they want, and the only thing you can do -- I guess -- is sit still like a chair.

Press is always a good strategy against UConn because at the very least it gives us less time to run our offense, all our screens and cuts. Several smart coaches have figured that out. If you create turnovers, that's just a bonus. The main goal is to limit our shot clock time. Hurley talked about attacking the pressure because it's not enough to dribble through it, we have to punish it with long passes that lead to easy baskets at the rim. We did that once against BYU.

This happens all the time. Teams put on a press and get a turnover or two and people panic and say we can't handle the press. The reason teams don't do it all the time is those same fans ignore all the times we easily break it and get easy baskets. If it was a surefire winner against us, or anyone, teams would figure that out pretty quick

Yup. And theyll figure it out and shred it. That was the fourth game of the season. Hurley is spot on about teams getting better as the season goes on.
When has a Hurley UConn team, except 2023-2024 shredded a press?

Do you hate UConn or something? Every comment I see from you is negative about the team and it's players.

From what I saw - all things considered - I may be changing my username at the end of the season. About this time last year, the boys were in Maui coming off a natty, not very hungry imo. This squad looks hungry and we have the pieces and coaching staff to do it.

Will be interesting to see if BYU is able to do the forearm to the defender drives all season or the refs start calling some of it. I think one ref was a BE ref. Tony Chiazza. When a ref spent most of his time telling our players to tuck in their shirts I knew it would be an odd night. Obviously Pitino will press us relentlessly. Not sure which other BE teams will. Maybe the Friars and Seton Hall. I doubt Arizona waits till the second half to try pressure on Wednesday night. Until we show we can inbound easily after made baskets it seems this will be what we face against good teams going forward.

Smith had a rough night, but I’ll chalk it up to still learning the offense. Stewart remains an enigma…it may just be that at this level, the game is too fast for him…on offense, some of his passes were head-scratching and on defense, he’s still a step slow and having to grab/reach-in. Ross is similar, but has a little more offense.

what I found most interesting is that they would do a phenomenal job for the first 13 minutes of the first half and then it was almost like they got a call to change the way they were calling the game. Up to then it was a free flowing game with the opportunity to both teams to fly. It frankly got a bit painful to sit there for two hours and 40 minutes as whistle after whistle!
