Fox Sports: The World Is Dan Hurley’s Playground: UConn Strikes Gold With Furphy And Reibe

" Murray was impressed with Furphy’s comfort level in a high-usage role and lauded his understanding of how to change speeds as a cutter. Hurley came away from the trip to Switzerland pleased with how Furphy carried himself on the court: He was the first player in and out of every huddle; he was constantly communicating with teammates and coaches; he ran everywhere he went — always a point of emphasis with Hurley."

When I first saw the article I had to take a screenshot because Reibe is donning the elusive UConn Adidas jersey.

Has to be friend of the program and podcast extraordinaire Sam Vecenie, right?

That Furphy spent his entire childhood on the other side of the world means the Huskies didn't become aware of him until receiving a tip from a journalist who specializes in covering the NBA Draft. The recommendation sent Murray down another rabbit hole of studying Furphy on tape from his time with both the national team and the NBA Global Academy.

So much of our early success came with international players. Nadav, Doron, Niels. Not sure if we consider Adama, Samson, Thabeet and others as well if they played HS here. But it has always lead to really good things and I think this team, with those two can join the past winners. Let's get #7.

That’s super interesting - cuz Vecenie has been propping him up for awhile and it’s now a chicken or egg…I didn’t realize he liked him even before we had him on the radar, so that actually makes sense why he’s so consistently high on him.

Tom Penders has been singing his praises for a long time as well.

Gotta add this, " This summer, Australia's U19 national team ran much of their offense through Furphy at the FIBA tournament by asking him to come off screens or come through actions and then make the right decisions with the ball in his hands, even if he wasn't technically the team's point guard. "

I think Niels would have been one of Hurley's favorite players ever if he'd gotten to coach him.

Doron was the type of PG I wish we had every year. The building could be burning around him and he acted as if all was going according to plan.

I think Newton had a lot of that. When he first got here we criticized him for it. He seemed too relaxed, not amped up enough. Turns out that was what made him unflappable in stressful situations.

I personally thought from day 1 he’d be a “playmaker” he won’t necessarily bring the ball up but he’s definitely got the passing and decision making of a primary guard.

I was going to throw his name in there as an example also but got tired of typing.

One of my favorite things about Newton was those long kickout 3s usually off an offensive board where he would just let it fly. I’d love to know his % on just those shots, felt like he hit 75% but I know that can’t be true

The praise is high almost too high but he has tremendous BBIQ. He is stacked up in a long line for PT but I hope he gets an opportunity to show his stuff.

Difference is we all got to see him play against USA U-19, other teams, and while that is not Big East basketball it's not 3rd grade hoops either.

I think it's much better to see a recruit play a future opponent's best player (e.g. Dybantsa) and D him up and score 24 than watch say Mahaney play us, and want that.

Insomuch as depth and PT - at the 2 we have Solo and Mullins, at the 3 we have Stewart, again some Mullins, Ross, Ross.

But having 3 guards such as Newton/Castle/Cam or Newton/Castle/Diarra that propelled us for 2 years, let's have Silas/Ball/Mullins or Silas/Ball/Furphy combo of players that can shoot, drive, pop a 12 and make smart decisions with AK and Tarris often being the benefactor.

Personally, I liked seeing Furphy drive and use high glass and floaters really well more than 3pt shooting.

Honestly, make him the highest paid assistant coach in the country. It’s crazy to think that we might still be pounding rocks together on offense had he not come aboard.
Both Kimani and Murray are great assistants. They seem happy where they are and we are incredibly blessed having them along with 5 Rings Tom Moore. There are hopefully a number of more chapters to go with this complete staff which is by far the best in college bb. I wonder how many titles they can wrap up over say the next 5 or 10 years. And they have gotten a LOT better as the time goes on.

Leading your own program is obviously a goal for a lot of assistants, and Kimani and Luke have both talked about that. But, being an assistant is almost perfect. In general, assistants get a lot of credit when things go well and none of the blame when things don’t.

It’s even better at UConn, where they get a lot of leeway to trial some things. They also have a head coach who is confident enough to explicitly share the credit and make sure other programs know his guys are ready to run one. They’re also really well-compensated, which certainly doesn’t hurt.

After the 2023 championship, the common refrain was hope you enjoyed this group because there’s no way they’re sticking together. Now, two plus years later,
things are so unsettled in the game as a whole that it makes sense, for now, to stick with a good thing.

I wondered about this. I'm grateful that Luke and Kimani have stayed with the program, but I wondered why no one else had snapped them up. I've assumed that the offers they received were either for smaller colleges or for inadequate money. I'd never really considered the idea that the instability in college athletics would make Connecticut a smart place to ride out the storm. It makes sense. In any event, I'm glad that we've kept "the dream team" together, including Tom Moore who I think is often forgotten.
