Former Big East commissioner John Marinatto has passed away at 64:

Sad news. No matter how you look at it, John was essentially in an impossible spot once the Big East was raided and schools started to leave. Prayers for his family and friends.
He also fought like hell to keep PC’s baseball team from the title IX death it ultimately succumbed to. In the end it cost him his job as AD. In both his big jobs he had he was handed no win situations. He was also a really nice man. RIP.

Kills me to give Thamel clicks, but this is very insightful and well-written.

He was a nice guy who really wasn’t up to the job that was given to him. Lacked vision and despite the platitudes he was neither respected nor feared by his board members. I always felt bad for him and the way he was utterly humiliated by Syracuse, Pitt and the ACC was just disgraceful. And the Pitt President was the Big East Chairman at the time. Like a lot of #2 guys he didn’t make the transition to the top spot.

was placed in a tough situation. But John was a good man who loved PC and the Big East.

Major loss not just for the Big East but for all of College athletics.

We need more highly committed, honest people in this business

I did not know the man but he seemed like a good decent person. RIP.
