The winning tradition set by former players like Maya Moore, Sue Bird, and Diana Taurasi influence today’s stars. Breanna Stewart, AP National Player of the Year, Wade Trophy winner, and three-time Final Four Most Outstanding Player, signed with UConn because she wanted to win four National Champions. Last night’s National Championship victory has Stewart three-quarters of the way towards her goal.

After 30 seasons and 917 wins, Auriemma is the highest-paid coach in women’s basketball. He is in the second year of a five-year contract valued at $10.86 million (not including perks or endorsements). This season he will earn $2.06 million ($400,000 base salary and $1.55 million for institutional speaking engagements and media-related appearances) and an additional $183,332 in post-season bonuses.

He knows at some point UConn’s historic National Championship streak will come to an end; Auriemma calls the idea of his program remaining undefeated “ludicrous.” Although, many commentators are quick to describe UConn Women’s Basketball as dynasty and compare his coaching achievements with the likes of Mike Krzyzewski, Phil Jackson, and Wooden.
