The seminal recording of the classic folk/calypso/rock song by The Kingston Trio from their eponymous debut album from 1958. The Kingston Trio's version remains unique among the many recorded for the quiet, almost desperate urgency of their performance, a far cry from the rollicking sound favored by nearly every other artist.

Back story. I arrived at St Francis College (now the University of New England) in Biddeford, ME as a freshman in the fall of 1973. Sometime later that fall, Jack Cassidy and Jorma Kaukonen of Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna were somehow talked in to (probably a favor to a rock connected student) driving up from Boston to play a gig at the gym. After the gig, I was at a house down by the beach when Jorma and Jack showed up. after some beers and dodgy self rolled cigs, they were persuaded to tune up and strum "The Water Song" for us. I was able to find a 1973 stage version of it on YouTube. My memory is a bit foggy, but it sounded like this, minus Papa John, who performed with them n the gym, but wasn't at the house. Enjoy:

Edit: Finding this reminded me of the evening back in the late '80's when my wife and I had Connecticut guitarist, composer and music teacher Steven Nystrup over for dinner in Bristol. I was relaying the above story. He went out to his car and brought in his guitar and proceeded to play The Water Song. I found Steven, and I'm guessing his son performing it on YouTube.
