Tom Rush - have always loved his work, Rockport Sunday is a beautiful guitar instrumental:
LOVE Tom Rush. Someone in my dorm at UConn had this early album by him. One side is early rock songs, the other country songs. This song is about the devastating Galveston Flood of 1900, with Tom playing slide guitar. If you can find this album, get it.

 
My dorm mate also had this early album from Jess Colin young, before he formed the Youngbloods. Haunting.

Had to post one of the "rock" cuts from this fabulous album. Love his treatment of this Buddy Holly song.

 
An old song, many wonderful versions of it out there, including Emmylou Harris. This has gotta be one of the most heart rending songs I've ever heard, from probably the most heart rending movie I've seen.
