Fun matchup between the guards. Junior ASU point guard Jadden Simmons was dominant on both ends of the court. Game high score but her defense and rebounding was really evident. Senior point guard Reagan Schenck had a double-double including 13 assists. She played the full 40 minutes and really demonstrated her experience and quickness. The Devil's overcame a three-point deficit in the final minute to hold on and win. NAU coach Loree Payne has to be pleased with this effort. As you recall last year the lumberjacks were in the top 10 in three-point shooting and one of their ace outside Marksman Emily Rodebaugh was one for 12. That's not going to happen much during the season so it'll be interesting how far Payne can take this team. Huge difference under new coach Natasha Adair. The trademark CTT line change was absent as Adair had a 7 deep rotation. Adair is in a really tough position having gotten the job late she had to fill holes on the roster through the portal. Three of the bigs that Adair brought with her are not ready for prime time and were really not in basketball shape. NAU outrebounded the Sun devils, out hustled the Sun Devils, and if not for the heroics of Jadden Simmons would have lost. While the Sun Devils have a cupcake non-conference schedule I wouldn't be surprised for them to be under .500 entering Pac play, this could be a 20 loss team. The contrast yesterday with the afternoon game I attended over at Grand Canyon demonstrated an amazing facility perfectly suited for basketball, huge student turnout that was enthusiastic, and a really well produced event. Over in Tempe ASU Sun Devils played after the men. While there was a huge student turnout they were there to get swag and setting aside those merchandise seekers it was another tiny attendance with a very vocal NAU contingent behind the visitor bench. Super fun day although I'm a little tired from the drive down and back. It was totally worth it. In an interesting schedule ASU travels over to Phoenix to play the Grand Canyon Lopes on November 30h. Although the Lopes don't have the size that the Devils present, given the lack of conditioning and the amazing speed that Molly Miller can put on the court I would mark this as an upset special. This is really hilarious. ASU President Michael Crow said ASU would never play Grand Canyon due to their for-profit status. Another exemplar of the somewhat self-aggrandizing philosophy of the ASU president. Crow was in the news recently for the governor debategate fiasco.
