It's because we didn't start winning with Weist until Shane Day took over the playcalling roll, if I recall correctly. Everyone on multiple threads is talking about Weist, and I think Weist finished last year extremely well as a leader, but let's not forget who was in the box calling the plays when we started winning. Shane Day is a very underrated UConn hero, and I think we are missing him a lot.

Also, being the conspiracy theorist that I am, I believe that Cummings is messing more with the line than is being mentioned. The people on our OLine are not that far outside the talent level that Foley has been accustomed to having, but they are performing much worse. Guards are pulling to block nobody. Countless offsides calls. Maybe it was the 3 years of GDL tinkering around that is making me go "coo-coo", but I really do feel like Foley doesn't have 100% of his design on this OLine...

I had forgotten about Shane day! Where is he now?

That's a good point on foley and the talent level. Is it possible that Cummings is Diaco's GDL?

Yup, Minidarren's right. He's the assistant OLine coach and something called the "Offensive Quality Control Coach" with the Redskins. I haven't the slightest clue what that means, but he did a nice job while he was here.

As for Cummings being our GDL, I wouldn't go that far. We've had a better mix of pass plays to run plays so far (outside of last game), and I'm still hoping that we will see a signature Foley run game return. Also, we haven't seen the wildcat yet...

He has one of the worst QBs in college football, a promising freshmen tailback and a good kid, though lousy athlete fullback who gets way too many touches. The O line is not good. How many OCs would be successful in this situation?

looks like they are trying to play old school B1G football, and don't have the personnel. wish Diaco would have watched last 3 games of last season, and actually see how this team moved the ball.. the players we have are not built for the type of game he wants to play

not for nothing I know your pissed and all but Weist had RSR Bennett (gone), RSR Greene (gone), RSR Friend (gone), RSR Tyler Bullock (gone), RJR Cruz, RJR, Mateas, RSO Hemingway (gone).Vastly different to what we are throwing out there now. It's not just a crappy line, it's EXTREMELY young and green.

And let's remember that the above mentioned players were completely out of shape due to a lack of conditioning and nutrition program and Bennett was playing on two bad knees. Until the last three or four games we all witnessed multiple plays every game where players blitzed the QB while two of the linemen literally looked at each other palms up.

TJ adjusted the QBs release and receiver patterns so plays would be quicker and crisper. Diaco wants the defense to win games yet we don't get many turnovers with the exception of Jones last night.
Did we beat ourselves by being too conservative? Perhaps but my sense is the history is if you put the ball in Whitmer's hands too many times to make a play he makes costly turnovers.
He just isn't the right guy for the job and the team knows it. His body language is really bad both on the field and sideline. The lightbulb though must go on in practice.

Possibly. Let's face it. It is tough in any organization to perfectly place 10-12 new managers on top of existing personnel. That's why I said earlier in the thread it's okay to move someone quickly. Diaco has shown that he could hire a good defensive staff. The special teams are solid too.

But offense it horrible, lacks any identity and hasn't shown the ability to adapt in-game. When you look back and realize Cummings couldn't call plays in his last job and an effective leader needs to adjust his managers.

And for all that, he didn't win a game until he put Casey Cochran in and we've lost him for the season. If all TJ had was Boyle and Whitmer, we're lucky to go 1-11

BL, if Boyle is healthy this season he will make plays. But the receivers need to see more of him in practice and the games because his velocity and spiral is at a completely different level than Whitmer's throws. Comparing his talent to Whitmer's is ridiculous. True, he wasn't ready last season against tough opponents, this year will be different as a Sophmore.

TJ Weist has reached legendary status in UConn lore. Damn, have we sunk low. Fire Cummings, dammit.

You do realize that a) our opponents in games two and three of that stretch had already mailed in the remainder of their respective seasons at the time we played them, b) were not very good prior to mailing in the ends of their season, c) we scored all of zero points in the first half of game one in that stretch, d) needed ten plays in one goal to goal sequence (including five consecutive plays from the one) to score the tying touchdown in game one and e) a pick six by our defense to score the winning points in our first win last year.

Yes, winning those games (especially the last two, by comfortable margins, in front of our fans who did deserve to see something good that season) was great and a far cry better than what the alternative would have been. We need a little perspective however as our offense wasn't exactly the 1980 Chargers.

Until we fix our offensive line the offense will be horrible and the only identity it will have is the inept offensive line.

I also remember when Jim Fassell wouldn't let Sean Payton call plays (at the job Payton had two jobs before New Orleans).

Quality control is watching tape and figuring out who is not getting their assignments right.

I agree on Day. He was a good one.

If Weist replaced Cummings I would be stunned. Weist's positive attitude and enthusiasm would fit in well with this staff.

I stayed at the Louisville game until the end last season. That gave me close distance to the UConn sideline. I yelled, "Start Casey!" a couple times, after Casey was put in and was moving the chains. TJ Weist then looked into whatever small crowd was left, alert to the suggestion. Casey was starting the next game. The rest is history.

We going to start a "Bring Back TJ" campaign?
