In this year of the race for the all-time best records, it appears doubtful that Big Mama's crew will be able to overcome their 1.5 ppg and 1% deficits for best ever NCAA scoring defense and FG% defense records set by that bad-mother UConn team of 2009-10.
However, ever since the second game with Cinci was played out, I know that the BY crew has been waiting with bated breath to find out if UConn set a team record for the least points given up to an opponent during a two-game season series. The 67-34 and 86-29 results put the team in at an average 31.5 for the season, which is really low.
But alas, when you played in a BEast conference with Providence for many years, you had a lot of chances to do even better, and in 2005 the Huskies took down the Friars twice by 88-33 and 71-24 to set the team low at a 28.5 average. This was especially impressive because 14 short years before in 1991, Providence had set the all-time NCAA record for season scoring average at 96.7. That was of course the year of UConn's first NCAA win and FF after they got a #3 seed for winning both BEast championships in an odd type bracket that included only one automatic qualifier among the four #1 seeds, PSU, who of course then got knocked out in the Round of 32 in UConn's East regional. UConn was 2-1 against the high-scoring 1990-91 Friar team, holding them 13.7 points below their season average and beating them in the BET final.
But getting back to records, all is not lost for Big Mama's team, because they did just set the record for scoring defense against a team in a three consecutive game set spanning two years, as they held Cinci to 31 points last year to help set a Husky best for 31.3 ppg for the trio, squeaking by the 31.6 mark of the 2003-04 and 2004-05 teams against Providence. Jubilations!
