Surprised that I havent seen a thread on this. (Hope I didnt miss it.)

Lindsay Allen, Karlie Samuelson were 2 of the notable rookies to get waived yesterday.
  • At #14, Allen is the 2nd highest player to get cut, but #13 Shayla Cooper (waived by Sun) found a spot with Chicago.
  • 17 of the top 18 picks are on a roster
  • Just 7 of the bottom 18 are
  • Sophie Brunner only undrafted player to make a squad.
And thus the top 18 dividing line continues to hold.

Wow Lindsay Allen
When you consider how few roster spots there are to begin with, not really surprising. And when you consider that for a "pure" point guard who can't realistically play any other position on the floor, there probably aren't more than two roster spots per team for such a player. Competition is tough.

Hopefully the fact that a one year starter for UConn still makes a pro team will resonate with recruits. However, seeing how few HS players know anything about how WCBB really works, probably not.

In Aglers interview on Dish N Swishin, he says Karlie suffered an injury and should be out for a while, thus the release. She played/shot well in preseason. Surprised she didn't get drafted at least in the 3rd, very, very underrated defender, high IQ, can shoot. Unlike other 3pt specialist in the past (Koehn, Lucas, etc), she can defend well enough.

and Saniya Chong makes the team... #BleedBlue
Saniya making the Wings roster caps of a great year for her. She works hard and earns a job in the starting rotation for a team that makes the final four, is the first member of her family to graduate from college, and then against the odds makes the Wings roster. Nice to hard work pay off.

I'll get back to you if UConn doesn't get Williams or ONO. In case you haven't noticed the competition has started to get tighter.
I simply cannot imagine a scenario where Geno cannot get high quality recruits that he wants. He has / will miss out on one or another specific "want to get", but, in the end, I am absolutely sure he will always get a good crop.

There are really only 2 things that Geno can't use in his sales pitch - the opportunity to build a program / be a big fish in a small pond and the uncontrollable (location, major, etc. if the player has a preformed preference not UConn). Otherwise, he has a lot to offer.

For a recruit who has a long term career perspective, the location isn't that bad. They well know where ESPN is and the proximity certainly helps. I would be surprised that any recruit visiting UCONN doesn't take the time to tour ESPN and the basketball hall of fame. Just don't count on UCONN allowing free phone access to sign up for the tours. ;)

Even Skylar Diggins did an internship at ESPN.

Amen. Next challenge: stick on the Wings' roster through the season. I believe.

At this point in the development of WCBB there are a lot more serious programs competing for top 20 talent that are more than 'come help us build something' sales to HS recruits. While a few teams still dominate the top of the rankings nationally, the competition in most of the conferences has become much tighter and the quality of the coaching much better as well. So yes, the competition for recruits is getting tighter and the competition on the court as well.

And at the moment I don't see a player in college that will challenge for a spot on the NT either in their last years of college or first year as a pro. Part of that is that the overall professional quality has increased, but also that I don't believe we have seen a Catching, Bird, DT, Parker, Moore, Stewart, or even a Jefferson coming out of HS or developing in the college game. Wilson may be in the same class as Charles, but Charles and others pros are likely to block her from being selected next year.

On that last paragraph - can anyone identify a likely NT selection for the WC next year who graduated this year or is a junior or senior in college?

Well, I do recall that early last season (shortly after the Baylor game, logically enough), Geno made a comment about how Crystal was a potential Olympian if not in 2020 then in 2024. That may still be the case.

I do think that A'ja Wilson will probably take the "young player" slot on the 2020 Olympic team, following in the footsteps of Maya and Stewie. There were probably older players in both 2012 and 2016 who could have made a greater contribution to those Olympic teams, but it is necessary to get the best young players to experience the Olympics early in their careers.

Is this the same Lindsay Allen said to be better than Moriah Jefferson when she was a senior at UConn? I can hardly believe it.[/QUOTE

IMHO, Allen is a WNBA point guard and should find a team, if not now then after an injury to somebody somewhere. She defended, found open teammates and could drive to the basket. She wasn't Jefferson, but nobody was.

I agree - I think Seattle could really use her for example. They need a serious PG to back up Sue - they are averaging 22+ TO per game these first two games, and Jewell should not be the PG. (They really could have used Renee the last few years and as I recall they traded her to MN for very little.) Upon occasion Allen proved she could be a real scoring option, not often enough, but she has that ability, and as a distributor she is excellent.

Drafted by the wrong team, I think. Liberty already have a deep, experienced roster. The guards they kept were Sugar Rodgers, Brittany Boyd, Shavonte Zellous, Epiphanny Prince, and Bria Hartley. That's a pretty tough group to crack...in the end it might be better for her that she was cut. She probably wouldn't have played much anyway in that company.

Rough that she was cut at the last moment of the last day, though. It's almost like New York thought just enough of her to discourage other teams from picking her up by cutting her at the last possible moment.

The cold truth is that she needs to shoot better to have a future as a pro. You've got to be willing and able to take the open three as a WNBA PG.

Minor disagreement--I can think of a few years where Geno did not get who he wanted or even a near clone---2010 I'm pretty sure was such a year. Also in the less than recent past fan were (I mean Uconn types) were jumping up and down and complaining about Geno and Recruiting--and not getting a decent "big". Not to dredge up old mud--but he wanted Diggins and got Faris. Geno is "the Master"
to some but one phrase read often herein---Uconn isn't for everyone --thus Geno isn't either.

Was on the road this weekend (ironically, coming back from South Bend after picking up daughter) and heard about this at a rest stop. Completely agree with you and UCMiami. Had a degree of surprise over the late timing hurting her ability to get a quick pick-up somewhere else: after all, Laimbeer is also an ND grad. But on the other hand, it's professional ball and Bill is "Trader Bill." Hopefully, she can work on her game and come back strong; if not this season, then overseas somewhere and then next year.
