So now that everyone is there, on campus and practicing (if not injured like Cheli), and before our exhibition game Monday, I thought maybe we could revisit the starting 5 people think. I'm talking about game 1 in the regular season, not exhibition games or scrimmages. What say you? Vote for 5...

A couple interesting tidbits.
  • Geno has said Ice has looked very good
  • Geno has had high praise for Ash and Blanca
  • Geno has said Fisher is the fastest player on the team and a good shooter
  • We've seen a "report" that Blanca is in the top 5 for expected "impact freshmen"
  • We've heard Serah has struggled a bit
Lots more tidbits from comments and practices, but I wonder if any of that will change people's votes from before. I'll admit I originally had Blanca starting (early in the summer) but changed that to Ash. I still think Serah starts.

In respect of proven, seasoned players, I anticipate Azzi, Sarah, Serah, KK & Ash to start … after this time, I cannot guess based on my lack of knowledge of preseason performance … only Geno knows …
Those are my starters as well.

I thought about doing a variation on this thread where instead of listing the starters you allocate the 200 available minutes among the players. That's a much bigger challenge. It does allow you though to "reward" players who may not be starting, but will play a significant role this season.

I have all starters being returning players, in particular El-Alfy starting over Williams. In my view Williams, playing in a new system, has a lot to prove to start over last year's starting center, who helped them win a national championship. I have Shade and Arnold replacing Bueckers and Chen for the same reason.

I have a nitpick question. First game that counts or who starts this coming Monday?

Exactly. Big difference to me. I have Azzi, KK, Caroline, Sarah and Ice for Monday. I have Azzi, KK, Sarah, Jana, and Caroline against Louisville.

Starting:

PG: KK
SG: Azzi
Forward: Shade
Power Forward: Sarah Strong
Center: Serah Williams

Off the bench:

PG 2: Heckle
SG 2: Caroline
Foward 2: Blanca
PF 2: Ice/Ayanna
Center 2: Jana El Alfy
I agree with your starting five except for Shade. Remember when Carolyn Doty played her super senior year (2012-13) and essentially had an honorary start before MoJeff would come in for her, I think Carol will do the same and start the season over Ashlynn and then Blanca will sub for her. Ashlynn will sub for Azzi. Eventually, Blanca will start and Carol come off the bench, say, by January.

I had Blanca at the 3 and Serah at the 5 with the other obvious 3. I don't think Ash is an obvious 4th. She may well start, but for me the problem is the position. Is she the 4th best experienced proven returnee? Absolutely, but she is not a 3, rather a very good 2 that might be asked to play the 3. IMO none of the natural guards are a good fit at the 3.

I'm not saying the "guard" options at the 3 are weak, just not ideal for a true championship contender. Paige was unique and very different as mostly a 3 last year. She was great and very comfortable at that position, along with the 1 or 2, and was even very very good at the 4 the previous year, although there she was out of position. She could rebound better than most 3's and defend the position well.

None of the current guard options can rebound at a high level for a 3, or like a more natural 3 might. Of those choices Ash is the best small candidate, a significantly better rebounder than Azzi for example, but nowhere even close to what Paige was last year. If we go with a three guard lineup this year, it will truly be just that, while last year it may have been three guards, but one was easily able to rebound and defend at the 3.

Anyway Ash has done plenty in her time here, knows the system, and could start, I just don't consider it a given. You may gain other things, but you give up something too with a natural 2 at the 3. I think the three guard lineup is much better when one of those guards is bigger and can rebound and defend against natural 3's. We had that last year, this year we don't IMO, but we do have two talented natural 3's this year we didn't last year too.

Blanca and Caroline "could" be as good as Ash this season, and be playing their best position. I suspect Caroline as a starter is far more unlikely unless her availability becomes more assumed than day by day, but Blanca appears to have the talent and at least unique foreign experience to be a serious contender for the last spot.

While I picked and am hoping for Blanca to be so good that she keeps Ash as a super-sub, Ash could still get quite a few minutes behind Azzi and Blanca if that happened, with the small ball lineup still getting some play time. There even could be a much lower probability of a threat to Ash starting from the bigs. Not because they would play the 3, but rather most feel Sarah could be great at the 3, so if there are two great bigs for the 4 and 5 that could happen as well. If Jana had a major leap for example, she could man the 5, and I think Serah could easily slide over to the 4.

Somebody that is really really good is going to be left out of the starting lineup, and some that are still very good won't be in the main rotation. Regardless of who we think will start, it will be very interesting to see how it plays out.

I vote that we do away with the classic number system, especially as it pertains to UConn and Geno.
I contend that Geno recruits basketball players and positionless players. In fact IMO, the players who really have to step up and make an early statement are the players that are pigeonholed in a “specific” position, like Allie.
One of my favorite aspects of the last 2 years in particular was the emergence of the brilliant small lineup. I pray that it will be a weapon this year too. Remember Joyce Edwards getting matched up with KK. OMG

This is a very thoughtful analysis and your conclusions about Ash as a ‘super sub’ are compelling. I’d only add that she is also one of three 40% 3-pt shooters on the team — I’m rounding up slightly for Sarah. This is as important as being able to guard natural wings, ie six footers. It’s possible Caroline or Allie, or even Blanca could emerge this season as that third 40% shooter and are each tall enough to defend and fight for rebounds against natural wings. But we don’t know yet how well any of them would fill that role and Ash is a proven holy terror on defense all over the court.

None of this proves that Ash must start — though I suspect she will early in the season. If all wishes were granted, Carol and Blanca would find their perimeter shot and compete for the wing. What a rich lineup this would give Geno!

In defense of Ash, she's not what you would think of as a natural 3. But what she lacks in height she makes up for with defensive intensity. Plus she rebounds better than most guards because she's willing to stick her nose in there and go toe to toe with the bigs. Also, teams will try to get a mismatch with a forward against a guard. Ash can handle this mismatch better than most other "natural" guards. "Hybrid" guards, I'm thinking of Sarah and Caroline, can handle this as well.

I have been trying to think like Geno before posting, not my desires but rather what I think Geno will do. This assumes everyone is healthy and able to practice regularly. Two regular starters from last year are gone. Azzi and Sarah and Jana I believe are locks. Geno has consistently used KK and Ash as interrupters and instant defense (KK) and offense (Ash). I think that continues so they don't start. Caroline is a tall guard that is experienced and good shooter so when healthy fills one slot likely with Blanca as her backup. I also believe that Azzi will act like the point guard at start because of what I think Geno values with KK being a pace changer. Therefore, I think the remaining sport will go to a natural forward that can shoot and that will be Ice.

So Azzi, Caroline at guards, Sarah and Ice at forwards, and Jana at center for his "normal" lineup with KK, Ash, Blanca, Ayanna, and Serah as backups. K9, Allie, Kelis, Morgan (I have not given up on her getting healthy), and Gandy as pushers and reserves. Obviously Morgan could easily move up when healthy and I can see Allie being Azzi's speller is she gets her defense fixed.
