Final Four Presser Link (Geno Unplugged)

Listen to Dawn discuss the Portal. Starts at 31.44

UConn starts at 2:41.31

what does Dawn mean by there are more people in the portal than there are scholarships? Aren't they in scholarships before they enter the portal in the first place?

Probably a slight exaggeration, but as Geno noted, there are almost 3 players in the transfer portal for each D1 program. 852 in the portal, 356 teams. Geno mentioned that 250 players in the portal last year didn't find a team.

Dawn may also be referring to the fact that roster size limit was larger than 15 this year, but is going back to 15 for the 2022-2023 season.

Two players are injured, but Stanford has a roster of 17 this year. So, it is possible there are not enough scholarships for players in the portal. I think someone mentioned that with incoming players, Arizona would be short a scholarship or two next year if people didn't enter the portal.

Dawn's comment that the transfer portal is affecting high school recruits, because coaches might be interested in players who have shown they can compete in college vs. a player coming from High School, is interesting.

My daughter played basketball in 3rd or 4th grade with a 2024 recruit getting interest from P5 programs and I know several 2022-2024 softball players, so how extra years of eligibility for college players impact recruiting is on my radar.

Wouldn't mind getting another crack at Louisville after that December game and giving them the 2013 championship game business.

This is a gray area to me. I believe in football scholarships are renewable one year scholarships but Women's BB may actually be a four year. Even so schools are not required to renew a scholarship after that fourth year. For example I seem to remember Heather Buck didn't automatically get a fifth year.

I think a lot of schools won't be extending scholarships to graduating seniors beyond that inital four years even though they have that COVID eligibility. They may offer some kind of assistance other than an athletic scholarship if their degree requirements are not complete.

You will see a lot of graduating seniors in the portal because of COVID year. So yeah, more transfers than scholarships.

I thought Dawn and Geno were very candid on the topic of the portal. Both coaches made excellent points and said what I think a lot of people are thinking. Hopefully Dawn is right about it being just a fad.

That’s the key. Scholarships are for four classes and all of a sudden there are five. That’s a potential 20 per cent increase in the player pool; no one in their right mind wants to forfeit an extra free year of college unless they are WNBA quality. That’s 25 players; a veritable drop in the bucket.

Outside of powerhouse football programs using multi-year ones most scholarships for all sports are only guaranteed for one year but USUALLY renewed if there's no academic or disciplinary problems.
