what does Dawn mean by there are more people in the portal than there are scholarships? Aren't they in scholarships before they enter the portal in the first place?
Probably a slight exaggeration, but as Geno noted, there are almost 3 players in the transfer portal for each D1 program. 852 in the portal, 356 teams. Geno mentioned that 250 players in the portal last year didn't find a team.
Dawn may also be referring to the fact that roster size limit was larger than 15 this year, but is going back to 15 for the 2022-2023 season.
Two players are injured, but Stanford has a roster of 17 this year. So, it is possible there are not enough scholarships for players in the portal. I think someone mentioned that with incoming players, Arizona would be short a scholarship or two next year if people didn't enter the portal.
Dawn's comment that the transfer portal is affecting high school recruits, because coaches might be interested in players who have shown they can compete in college vs. a player coming from High School, is interesting.
My daughter played basketball in 3rd or 4th grade with a 2024 recruit getting interest from P5 programs and I know several 2022-2024 softball players, so how extra years of eligibility for college players impact recruiting is on my radar.
