Final BE OOC thread 25/26

Sr. John's being most likely the 2nd best team in the Big East has to beat Kentucky. That's the game I will have the most attention on. If the lose to Kentucky that would be a major dent for the Big East.
All the numbers aside, this St John’s game just feels super important for perception of the conference. Villanova, Butler and Seton Hall have been nice stories but St John’s had all the hype as that second juggernaut. It would be earlier to buy the narrative that they just needed a little time to gel if they roll into the conference schedule coming off wins against Ole Miss and Kentucky. If they lose to a struggling UK and then start winning games in the conference, it’s just going to be more “the Big East sucks” fodder

Big win for Nova at Whisky Friday night

Quad 1 win
Unfortunately, although in the state of Wisconsin, the game was played at a neutral site. And even if it were a true road game for 'Nova, it would have been quad 2 anyway as Wisconsin is currently 77th in the NET.

They announced during the game last night it was Quad 1, maybe Whisky slipped to 77 after the loss, I expect they'll be back in the top 75 before long

That was a quality win for Nova, if if both schools delivered less than quality games.

Unless Wisconsin slipped from 50 to 77, the announcers were mistaken.

Still a good win for the league. Just saying it isn't a quad 1 win, and won't become one unless Wisconsin climbs into the top 50.

Whisky isn't very good, but any win against a P4 team on the road is a solid win. It's the same team that beat PC by 20. Nova looked like a tourney team, currently 29 in the NET. Same can be said about SHU & Butler.

None of these teams look like squads we shouldn't beat on the road or at home.

As long as we take care of the basketball, we should bully SHU.

Most of the bubble teams are in the fat part of the distribution curve, so a win or loss can move a team several slots in either direction. There are still quite a few games by P5 against other P5, so we will learn a lot more over the next week.

As of this morning, there are 35 P5 teams in the Top 40 of NET, and there are probably 40 bids available for P5 teams. Any Top 40 NET team from a major conference will be basically a lock on Selection Sunday.

From here it’s clear there’s a split between tourney potential (5) and non-tourney teams (6). SHU, Nova and Butler especially have to avoid dropping too many games to the bottom half.

Creighton is the most dangerous since I think they set themselves too far back for a bid but as we saw with Xavier, they can also play very well on a given night on top of the fact that McDermott’s teams usually iron things out through Big East play.

Yup. Crey always a threat because of McD…

We need the bad teams to just keep losing to the top teams. It’s ok if SH drops game to st j us or Nova. They just can’t do it against the dregs

Here's the updated NET. Villanova is up to #29. Looks like it was a Quad 2 win. As you said, Wisconsin would have to move back into the top 50 for it to be a Quad 1 win. If Wisconsin does decent in the B1G then they could easily move into the top 50.

I'm not rooting against the Big East. I am just being realistic about where the conference is. I just find it so strange that you have your head buried in the sand and refuse to admit where the conference is. Anyone that posts anything remotely against the Big East being good this year and you go ballistic. That's the only issue I have with you. I'm sure you're a nice guy but this makes you seem really strange. That's why many of us have been mocking you the last week or two.
God bless you if that’s your only issue w him

This game sure looked good on paper before the season but man is this ugly. All respect to Pitino, I just can’t see how either he or Pope turn these two into real contenders this year.

St. John's offense is still so dodgy.

Specifically, the offense is really undisciplined. This is not just shot selection, it is players being where they are supposed to be. Offense takes more discipline and harder work to be really good than defense does. I saw at least 3 times where the St. Johns lead on the break got to the rim, and the shooters were not at the 3 point line yet for the kick out. At least two of their misses from 3 were shooters still catching up to the break and not getting their feet set before shooting.

SJU players also seem to penetrate a lot before their teammates have cleared out, creating log jams at the rim.

Hopkins on SJU is charmin soft. He wants no part of his rotation to box out Moreno. He just gave up 4 points because he didn't want to body up.

FG% after 24 minutes:
SJU 35%
UK 40%

Fouls:
SJU 12
UK 16

SJU is only up because they're 16-20 on FTs. Otherwise this game is a mess offensively.

SJU is very talented, but is not a very good team. Maybe Pitino can turn this around, but it is almost Christmas, so when is that going to happen? This may just be who this team is.

That 10 seconds call is unforgiveable. They didn't even realize they were close to running out of time.
