Film Review: Evaluating Ross's 2024 Defense.

I’ve said all along, I don’t have to squint hard to see him becoming a defensive stopper. I do find it interesting to see your view is that he needs to be more aggressive on defense. I’d say almost the exact opposite. To me his biggest issue is that he mixes in good defensive possessions with giving some absolute wide open looks to his man. The common theme I see is over-aggressiveness. He tends to bite on pump fakes, gets off balance pressuring the ball-handler, or over helps off-ball. I loved seeing the second half against BC because he seemed to play much more composed on the defensive end. He’s long, athletic, and has some good defensive instincts, and doesn’t need to do as much as he has historically to be a disruptive defender.
When I say aggressive I meant strictly vocally. He’s more than aggressive enough physically if not too aggressive at times like you said in help or on the close outs.

The next thing is being more aggressive vocally to make sure his teammates are on the same page. Seeing as that’s his ticket on the floor he should own that end of the floor and be a leader in helping his teammates and take command. Also holding them accountable if they miss an assignment.

There were too many times he did his part and someone missed an assignment and he was okay with it or didn’t say anything. He knows the defense. Time to start being accountable to make sure everyone else is doing what they should too and bring them along.

I don't like the +/- for each player. It's computed by score change while they clock minutes but there are so many reasons it does not resemble reality.

1. UConn fouls a 3 pt shooter and Hurley yanks the guy who did an inserts another player - say Ross. 3 foul shots made, Ross is -3.
2. On ball defense - you can deny, front, and get the ball out of your guy's hands but if anyone else fails at their job, you also get -2 for a bucket.
3. Players who don't shoot volume suffer the most. Ross is not a prolific shooter, quite the opposite, so he has limited + opportunities directly. Mullins and Karaban and Solo and Tarris probably have the most chances any given night and a player like that who gets hot would be smart to grab a bench seat and rest, hydrate. Not saying they do, but do game the system for +, they could.

Anyway, stats and the eye test tell a lot more than any +/- will.
Most of these issues are resolved with a larger sample size when these events are likely to even out. The NBA is obviously better than college in this regard. It'll never be perfectly accurate, but things like RAPM tend to look pretty accurate by season's end.

RAPM leaderboard last season:
Flagg
Clayton
Knueppel
Broome
McGlockton
Kam Jones
Uzan
Tugler
Sion James
Clifford

But yes, it's probably less accurate for low minute players. But it is generally more accurate for defense than stats that rely solely on the box score, especially for players who aren't rim protectors or play on a team that presses.

I the history of fandom, I have never seen a fan so attached to a bench guy. It feels like a scout that loved what he saw and thinks he saw something no one else did, and would be damned if he wasn't right about it. I'm sure if it ever plays out, the receipt will be massive. Lol.

You really aren’t on other message boards.

I promise there’s so plenty of guys who do this kind of analysis for their teams. Maybe moreso in football than basketball. We’re insulated here though. Or maybe it’s just Michigan football fans who get this deep into the weeds when it comes to analysis. Lol

I’ve always found it cool when people take deeper dives into the film to show what’s what. These guys have a whole website that makes money to do what they do, but I’ve learned so much about football by reading their film breakdown posts every week with videos to match what they are talking about. This kind of stuff helps educate a fanbase so people are more aware of what they are watching.

The point was not about the deep dive but about your attachment to Jayden Ross of all the players we've had over the past few years

You know more than anyone I have a player on almost every team that I seem to annoyingly advocate for lol

Yeah, pretty much.

And no, not on other message boards running through film. I occasionally take a peak at some of the BB's or rivals to see if there was any national chatter around Uconn, but that's about it. BTW, Rupp Rafters moved to Rival's and is not nearly the insane asylum it once was (and much less interesting content). I hope we never sell out that way. Any message board I've seen move to Rivals seems to lose it's former identity. I'll say this, the BY may be the best one out there right now.

We spend way more time on this board talking about Ross, who at best is a complementary piece, than, say, Braylon Mullins. Even if that's driven by one poster, it's still a little weird.

So I guess that after this analysis J Ross should be considered one of the STARs of last year's team? Sounds right to me. In Ross we stand! SMH

Let's wait to see what he brings to the court this year. If he is very different than the last 2 years, that would be great. The proof is in the pudding.

Let’s get this guy some NIL

It’s no stretch to see that Ross has the athletic and instinctual profile to be a great defender, and as you would expect, there have been flashes.

So I don’t know what cherry-picked clips prove that even his doubters wouldn’t already admit. I’m sure it wouldn’t be very hard to put together a set of clips from last year where he was either beat easily by his man or missed an assignment.

I give the OP a solid laugh emoji for "researching" what everybody knows.

Ross needs to show in games behaviors he shows in practice to get consistent rotation minutes.
