RE is a perfect case study for multiple things being true at the same time, but in total, his first stint was a tremendous boost to the program, the second time through the game changed, he did not and wasn't ever going to. He did have a very strict philosophy on how to run a program, "the right way," and that was something to be proud of. It also possible to do that and still win games because legalized 'cheating" isn't cheating anymore.

Everything else is just projection of people's emotions about his tenures.
You are projecting your emotions about his tenures. He's a career losing coach who never took responsiblity for his failures. He coached 16 years in various conferences and had 2 winning conference seasons at 5-2. He took a 9-4 Turtle team and turned it into a 2-10 team.
He quit on the UConn team twice. Only person who he didn't hold to his "right way" was himself. 1st was his "dream job" exit and then his HCRE2.0 "retirement" exit plan after the Holy Cross mess.
He was so bad as HCRE2.0 it seemed like he came back to UConn to kill the football program.
