Ferriter Named Captain for 2013 Baseball Season
Fifth-Year Senior Serves as Team Captain for Second Consecutive Year
STORRS, Conn. – University of Connecticut head baseball coach Jim Penders announced that the team has voted redshirt-senior outfielder Billy Ferriter as the captain for the 2013 season. Last season, Ferriter served as one of four captains for the Huskies.
The coaching staff announced to the team Ferriter’s honor at the Storrs family plot at the top of the cemetery, Friday morning. The team concluded its conditioning segment with a scavenger hunt there, shortly after dawn.
“Billy has quietly and doggedly emerged as a leader over his four-plus years in our program,” stated Penders. “His teammates not only respect his work ethic, but they also know how far he has come as a student and athlete during his time here. I’m pleased that his perseverance and drive are viewed as examples by his peers and I’m confident he will do a good job leading us to our goals in 2013.”
Ferriter, from Nashua, N.H., was an All-BIG EAST First Team selection in 2012. As UConn’s lead-off hitter and center fielder, he batted .319 and tied for the team-lead in runs with 43, and swiped a team-best 24 bags.
