UMass essentially got kicked out of the MAC, NMSU was kicked out of the Sun Belt. The strategy is survival/don’t turn into Idaho.

Liberty is just up from FCS and is waiting for an opportunity (that they’ll probably get before UMass or NMSU).
It's interesting that we hear how these schools can't survive on their own, yet FCS schools like James Madison, South Dakota State, and Villanova, have been kicking around upgrading to FBS. South Dakota State especially has gone all out in investing in it's football program.

With the vast bell curve between Alabama and Old Dominion...it just makes sense to split the 130 teams that purport to play for the same national championship.

A convenient fiction, for sure.

The rub is...which teams would make up the top half of the curve.

Montana looked at making the jump to FBS, too; but declined. Buffalo moved rapidly in the late '90' s to get into FBS while Stony Brook and Albany upgraded to FCS. Going in the opposite direction, Boston U, Northeastern and what is now UMass Lowell all dropped (FCS) football entirely. Before FBS and BCS, U Vermont started a football program in 1886 (and lost their 1st game 91-0 to Dartmouth), which makes it one of the first programs out there; but, dropped football in 1974.

2016 is the latest expense data available. Here is that data combined with the current Sagarin on how the G5 overlaps with the P5 and with FCS:

The typical P5 program is Missouri with a Sagarin of 38 and spending at $21.1M

The Bottom 10 P5 programs average a Sagarin of 83 and spending at $24.9M
(Rutgers is worst, Kansas, Illinois, Ore State, UNC, Pitt, Arizona, Arkansas, Tenn, UCLA)

The Top 10 G5 programs average a Sagarin of 45 and spending at $12.6M
(Boise State is best, Memphis, UCF, Houston, Fresno St, App St, USF, Utah St, Toledo, Cincy)

The typical G5 program is Ohio with a Sagarin of 104 and spending at $10.1M

The Bottom 10 G5 programs average a Sagarin of 164 and spending at $10.0M
(Texes State is worst, UTEP, Old Dominion, Charlotte, San Jose State, Rice, UConn, UTSA, C Michigan, Bowling Green)
[UConn (151) is by far the highest spender of the group at $20.5M]

The Top 10 FCS programs average a Sagarin of 87 and spending at $5.1M
(ND State is best, SD State, JMU, Ill State, N Iowa, Samford, E Washington, South Dakota, Villanova, Jacksonville State)
[JMU (82) spends $10.1M and Nova (112) spends $6.7M]

G5 Spending:
AAC $15.7M average
MWC $11.3M
C-USA $9.5M
MAC $8.2M
Sun Belt $7.4M

CAA (FCS) Spending:
CAA $6.1M

In this snapshot -
The Top 10 of the G5 is better than the Bottom 10 of the P5, and a bit lower than the typical P5.
The Top 10 FCS is better than the typical G5.
Indy FBS are ND (23), Army (68), BYU (78), UMass (138), Liberty (146), & NM State (148)

UMass spending is $10.5M, or about half of UConn's. Is UMass football worse off financially? Is UConn's football revenue $10M greater than UMass'?

Any program can move to FBS if they meet the requirements:

1. Sponsor a minimum of 16 varsity intercollegiate sports, including football, based on the minimum sports sponsorship and scheduling requirements set forth in Bylaw 20.

2. Schedule and play at least 60 percent of its football contests against members of Football Bowl Subdivision.

3. Average at least 15,000 in actual or paid attendance for all home football contests over a rolling two-year period. [Bylaw 20.9.7.3]

4. Provide an average of at least 90 percent of the permissible maximum number of overall football grants-in-aid per year over a rolling two-year period. [Bylaw 20.9.7.4-(a)]

5. Annually offer a minimum of 200 athletics grants-in-aid or expend at least four million dollars on grants-in-aid to student-athletes in athletics programs. [Bylaw 20.9.7.4-(b)]
Hope we can meet the 15000

They get $850,000 a year from football playoff money
The AAC schools received about $2,000,000
Not counting the $2,000,000 in media
I’m not sure what media deal they have but I suspect it’s a fraction of our old contract.
